The Church’s response has been to force me, an usher in a Catholic Church, to undergo an enhanced level of background check.

My level of interaction with children is to point to the bathroom and say “over there”.

Stall and deflect.

A priest once asked me for my church references in order to be Godfather to a friend’s son. I said I’d be happy to once the church starting policing their own.

When I was Grand Knight of my Knights of Columbus Council, I had to tell men with previously-completed FBI background checks, Top Secret security clearances, that they had to submit to the archdiocese’s screening process.

I took a lot of heat for a lot of guys whose reputations were sterling, verified by extensive personal investigations, and in some cases, polygraph. They found it a bit... insulting. At the time, we noticed the promulgators of the policy weren’t being investigated. I had to quell a riot or two.

Our archbishop was... demon “uncle ted.”

It is a stalling tactic.
