Christ is the Ruler and Sustainer of the universe, and simultaneously the Friend who is closer than a brother. The balance is found, not in ourselves, but in Him. We must respond to Him however He chooses to reveal Himself from moment to moment, whether in awe at His majesty or in love at His embracing of us.
Part of the trick, I think, is in remembering at all times the aspect of God that we are not seeing: when in awe of His majesty remembering that we need not fear since He is our Friend, and in enjoying His friendship remembering that He is Lord of all--and I say this to myself more than to anyone else, for I need to remember it too.
