Pope Francis Calls for Lord's Prayer to be Altered as Current Wording Suggests God....

Pope Francis has called on the Roman Catholic Church to alter the Lord’s Prayer because he believes the current translation suggests God is capable of leading us “into temptation”.

Instead, “Our father”, which is the best known prayer in Christianity, should be said using the phrasing adopted by French bishops, which reads as “do not let us enter into temptation”.

The alternative wording used in France implies that it is through human fault that people are led to sin, rather than by God.

The pontiff made the suggestion during a televised interview on Wednesday evening, in which he claimed that the traditional phrasing was “not a good translation”.

“I am the one who falls. It’s not him pushing me into temptation to then see how I have fallen,” he continued. “A father doesn’t do that, a father helps you to get up immediately. It’s Satan who leads us into temptation, that’s his department.”

So why was it translated “wrongly” to begin with?

I suspect it’s not but I’ve only ever read the translation.

We won’t be seeing that for a while.

Depends on how long the current suspension is for and if it’s a suspension.

As for this topic, the Catholics sure have their hands full with this pope.

He’s really gone over the line on this one.

What CHUTZPAH to presume to correct the wording of Jesus.

Some things you just don’t mess with.

My wife’s best friend says nothing scares her more than her free will. Not leading us into temptation seems like an acknowledgement of our frailty. That is also the reason I never pray for patience. I have trials of sufficient severity as it is.

Current wording suggests God is capable of leading people ‘into temptation’

It seems that the current Pope may be capable of doing this.

I don’t think it was.

At this link to the verse in Luke 11, there are options for looking at the Greek and then on to a Strong’s for translating.

It seems to have been properly translated by virtually translation listed at the link.

Manuscripts, not autographs. All the autographs are, so far as we known, long gone. Some Greek verb forms don't really have close correspondence with a particular English form. The key verb here is a subjunctive aorist, and we don't have an aorist--and neither does Latin. That the negative is μὴ is of some significance as well--but I will want to consult grammars before commenting further. The verb itself means literally to bear or cary inward, and the prepositional prefix indicating inward appears two words later as a free-standing prefix, so there is a real emphasis on the inward aspect. I'll try to check the best witness into the Hebrew tomorrow.

The only way that Pope Francis avoids having to account to Jesus for this is if he is thrown alive into the Eternal Lake of Fire. Either way it works for me.
