Catholic Nurse Sues Duke University Hospital After Refusing to Assist with Abortions

A Catholic nurse sued Duke University Hospital in Durham, N.C., alleging it discriminated against her religious beliefs by failing to accommodate her objections to abortion, birth control and giving vaccinations.

Sara Pedro, a Catholic nurse, moved from New York City in August 2016 to take a job at Duke University Hospital. Soon after she began work at Duke, Sara asked for and got an exemption from receiving hospital required vaccines. She also told hospital administration that she was "unable" to assist with abortions as well as administering contraceptives and "any vaccines" based on rulings by the Catholic Church.

In December 2016, Sara was placed on unpaid leave. She has moved back to New York City and claims she has been unable to return to work as she is suffering from post-traumatic stress.

Well, there’s the flip-side of the coin, I guess. *SHRUG*

Why would ANYONE take ANY job that compromises their deeply felt morals and beliefs?

You know, like that 0bama guy...

The Catholic church prohibits vaccinations? I didn’t know that.

Two separate issues. The Catholic Church does not forbid vaccinations.

The job of a nurse or a doctor should have the job of healing.

She had me until I read she doesn’t even want to do vaccinations. What? With flu season now upon us?
Not very useful to the Hospital, now are we?

Too Picky for a Hospital. She should work in a lab or in physical therapy /rehab.

The extreme majority of abortions are elective procedures. Medical professionals refuse to perform elective procedures all the time (radical mastectomies of healthy tissue, excessive plastic sugery, preventative root canals and implants, et al.). Abortions that aren’t elective, say to save the life of the mother, are not prohibited by the Catholic church.

Science says that life begins at conception, the heart beats at 6 weeks and the ability to perceive pain is still a gray area before the third trimester. With that stated, medical professionals should not be compelled to participate in procedures deemed personally abhorrent, and there’s loooong history of doctors and nurses not participating in abortions, forced sterilizations, etc. on moral grounds.

...and yes, I agree, that some of the other stuff may indicate that she’s looking for a lottery ticket.

I’m not disagreeing. She can’t NOT have known what she was getting into.

Exactly. Did she NOT research where she’d be working and what their policies were? Is she looking for an easy payday? Not quite sure what her motivation is.

"Catholic Church forbids all abortions."

No it does not forbid ALL abortions. Neither does it forbid ALL capital punishment. In extreme cases, either may be sanctioned.

Only certain vaccines are prohibited, i.e., those based on aborted fetal tissue. There are vaccines that are perfectly good moral alternatives; FReepmail me if you are interested in a list.

Since I cannot send attachments via FReepmail anyway …

For a list of ethical vaccines, go to the Children of God for Life website and click on “Vaccines using aborted fetal cell lines,” near the top (PDF file).

I appreciate the offer to obtain this info, but no thank you,
it would be too depressing.
I didn’t realize such vaccines existed.
I shouldn’t be so surprised.
I’ve heard of this material being used in far more bizarre ways.

When I say ‘bizarre’, I mean something like this below;

**May 24, 2014 The Telegraph (Science)
Aborted babies incinerated to heat UK hospitals!

No it does not forbid ALL abortions.

Actually, it does, but one must distinguish between active killing and “letting die,” two very different things. (When speaking of euthanasia, the same rule applies, by the way.)

I have spoken with a number of OB-GYNs from a variety of faiths, as well as those of no particular faith at all, and asked them to imagine a scenario where an abortion would be required in order to spare the life of the mother. None of them offered one. The closest example was a case of ectopic pregnancy, in which case the child would die regardless of any action taken. Inaction would certainly result in the death of the mother.

Oh, I assure you, it is not depressing! This merely lists the most common vaccines, and their ethical alternatives. Not every vaccine has an ethical alternative, but most do. This is a tiny file; print it out and keep it handy, so you can show it to your doctor when it comes time to have your shots ;) You will not regret it, I promise you.

Think Church allows use of therapies derived from aborted fetal tissue, but forbids the abortion to obtain it.

Like can receive kidney transplant from murder victim while condemning murder.
