Let me just say first that what Paulinus failed to tell you is that when Amoris Laetitia was first published, I was at his house at Notre Dame. When he saw the first clips, he got very worried, which of course were the parts in which the press was interested. He got very worried, and practically said that Pope Francis has changed the name of the game. I told him, ‘Let’s wait to get the full story.’

The full story is that this pope did not do what all other popes do when they write something - Francis did not send Amoris to experts to be vetted and edited for moral content. He did such a bad job that most of the Church is scratching their heads wondering what his true intentions were in writing it. And four Cardinals have asked him to clarify himself.

It should be remembered that he held some conferences and sent out questionnaires before he penned it. That is not the way popes are supposed to put together a letter. Amores is essentially a consensus deal. He found all the ideas he agreed with and wrote them up. That is not very responsible. That is the kind of stuff Saul Alinsky socialists do.

The pope is in the position of shepherding the Christian flock through the dangerous trails, instead he is allowing his charges to be forced into brambles where they will get stuck and become food for wolves.

My Muslim friends constantly compare the Catholic Church favorably to some other Christian churches, which have some rather strong anti-Muslim language.

And this is where he gets it all wrong. The Catholic Church should not be compared "favorably" in this regard. It should be speaking the Truth about the demonic false religion of Islam. But, since Vatican II, Rome has been more interested in teaching falsehood such as ecumenism than the Catholic Truth.

I think, based on the rest of that section he means that they are “old”, not “used”...and therefore lose their “effectiveness”.
