That Remarkable Photo From the Grotto at Notre Dame
Thoughts From the Side of the House ^ | 12/19/16

I posted something 8 days ago on my Facebook page that has kept me busy with correspondence all week. It’s been shared and re-shared (update: thousands and thousands of times) and I’ve heard from people from all around the world. Up to this point, I have not shared any thoughts about it. I’ve simply shared the photo without much comment. However, since this image was entrusted to me, I feel a responsibility to say a few things. First, let me rehash the story:

A week ago Sunday, due to my poor shower time management (1 shower for 6 people), we experienced a “shower production bottleneck” and couldn’t get everyone through in time to make our customary 11:00 a.m. Mass at the Cathedral. So I bailed out and hit the 11:45 a.m. Mass at Sacred Heart Basilica at Notre Dame. Afterwards, it was snowing that wet and heavy snow. On my way to the parking lot, I instinctively stopped at the Grotto where I was touched by the presence of one lone student kneeling devoutly in prayer. I decided to take a photo because this guy – he looked like some kind of athlete – didn’t move the whole time. Snow was piling up on him. As soon as I took the photo, my iPhone suddenly shut down despite the fact that I had a 42% charge. It was 1:50 p.m.

Nine hours later, when everyone was in bed, I had forgotten all about taking this photo and I went to free up some memory from my phone by deleting things. As I sat at our dining room table, I was astonished to see this image of a vertical cloud directly above the student. When I took the picture, I can assure you that there was nothing there.

During........

Note that this is at Notre Dame University in Indiana, not Notre Dame in Paris.

My first thought was... it’s snowing. Snow got in front of the lens.

Seems like that would have showed more as a foreground effect.

That is a very clear image of Mary. It almost looks like a statue.

Nice Photo.
It’s a snowflake close to the camera.

I thought it was steam. Is there a pipe on the ground inside the grotto at that location, maybe for water or something?

ON second thought, after looking at it more closely, there’s a smaller very similar image to the left...it’s a snowflake falling

Beautiful shot, marshmallow.

I went to college at Notre Dame and know the grotto's sacred spell. At dusk, during a snowstorm, or in the midst of a deep fog, the Notre Dame campus, with many Gothic style buildings can indeed be an enchanting place.

Emerson tried the best he could to capture this feeling in words...

Merry Christmas.

Nowhere in the article does it mention that this is a representation of the Grotto in Lourdes.

Mary's message to the alumni and administration of Notre Dame: You once had a lovely Catholic university here, dedicated to me. You sold your Catholic soul for fame, glory, and football, but you're 4-8 and watching bowl season on TV. Was it worth it?

Several years ago I was in Barcelona Spain where I was severely sunburned all over my upper body when I fell asleep on the beach. Two days later I was in the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris and was in tortuous pain. My skin was red and super tender. I itched all over and the skin was peeling.

I couldn’t get up the energy to walk around and see the beautiful stained glass and architecture as I was in distress, so I sat in one of the chairs in the front row of the cathedral facing the alter.

I began praying for relief and almost instantly this magical energy moved into my body. It’s hard to describe as it was more in me than on me. It felt like complete full body hug that left a feeling of peace.

As the feeling drifted away I noticed that I no longer itched anywhere. My skin was no longer peeling and the redness was gone. Completely healed instantly. Often when I think of this event the warm hug feeling returns in me and I re-experience it again.

Yes, the Cathedral of Notre Dame is a very special place.

Thank you for posting, it’s a beautiful photo and story. The Blessed Mother holding the Infant Jesus appeared to my mom shortly before mom passed. What a blessing for mom and for all of us.

Why not get excited about the actual image of JESUS CHRIST the God man instead of some phony photography anomaly?

“Afterwards, it was snowing that wet and heavy snow.”

Looks like some of it got on the lens.

Indeed - a little to the right of center. Amazing.
