Georgetown, a Jesuit university, is the First U.S. College With a Hindu Priest as a Chaplain
The Washington Post ^ | 8/30/16 | Julie Zauzmer

When Brahmachari Vrajvihari Sharan led his first worship service in his new job as a Hindu chaplain Sunday, he knew his audience.

As the service began, he asked worshipers to clear their minds. “Close all the tabs that are open, just as you would do to a Firefox window,” he said.

The comparison — of a spiritual mindset to an Internet browser — worked at once. More than 40 college students, many of whom had been up until 3 a.m. the Saturday night before this 9 a.m. service, chuckled appreciatively and fell into a reverent silence.

This is Sharan’s new job: bringing Hindu tradition to Georgetown University, in a youth-savvy voice. He is the first Hindu priest to serve in the role of chaplain at any university in the United States.

Other universities have employed Hindu monks, who have less training than priests, or have enlisted lay people to work as chaplains for Hindu students, Georgetown officials said.

That this Jesuit institution, founded as a Catholic college and still proudly dedicated to its religious purpose, would be at the forefront of educating youths about a different religion should not be counterintuitive, Georgetown officials said. “Part of our mission and our ethos is our desire to form the whole person,” said the Rev. Greg Schenden, a Catholic chaplain at the university. Georgetown wants its students to experience spiritual growth during their time in college — all students, not just Catholic ones.

“There’s nothing a Hindu won’t do.” Weird “Mike & Molly” reference.

Outrageous.

Why don’t they have a Catholic priest?

Aren’t there any alumni out there who will send this institution a message through their checkbook?

WOW! You hit it right on the head! I had a Jesuit 20 years ago tell me that here was a very serious fight within the order for control. The fight was between the “straights” and the “gays”. God help the Jesuit order!

Georgetown has long since ceased being a Catholic university so what’s the big deal?

Hinduism is very interesting. There are some 330+ MILLION "faces" of gods, goddesses, male, female, animal, mythical creatures and infinite mixtures thereof.

My husband was POSITIVE that, somewhere in India, SOMEONE was worshipping a '56 Chevy. He was probably right. :o)

Compare that to Judaism, Christianity and Islam, with the ONE God and you have a diametrically opposed faith.
St. Thomas (the doubter) went to India and converted many. Still today you will hear the name THOMAS for many Indian Catholic men.

Read my post about the evangelization of India by St. Thomas, the doubter.

When my husband and I worked in the KSA ]Kingdom of Saudi Arabia] there were many Indians. ARAMCO would ONLY hire "people of the Book," which, is, of course, the Bible.
Muslims would not, therefore, hire Hindus: ONLY Christians and Muslims.

There was ONE Jewess, an American, who was a physical therapist for women over there. She was hired because she was American. I happened to meet her in Jeddah...long story but a true one.

Nice to hear that!

It NEVER hurts to attend Mass and
*praise and adore our Creator;
**receive His Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity at Communion;
***hear His good words in the readings;
****show Him our gratitude;
*****and to ask our good Lord for help.
