Modesty protects the mystery of persons and their love. … Modesty protects the intimate center of the person. It means refusing to unveil what should remain hidden. It is ordered to chastity to whose sensitivity it bears witness. … Modesty is decency. It inspires one’s choice of clothing. It keeps silence or reserve where there is evident risk of unhealthy curiosity. It is discreet (CCC 2521-2522).

I would prefer if the USA volleyball women did not advertise they are strippers. I don’t why women feel like they have to show their private things. Is it attention they are craving?

No offense to the Monsignor, but why else would anyone watch women’s beach volleyball?

On the one hand there is the butchery and repression of Islam.

On the other hand, there is the total paucity of basic human decency based on morality in western countries.

In the fight against Islam, people should not praise (current) western “civilization” values that actually are nothing but degradation of people as sex objects and various shades of depravity and immorality.

(I don’t mean that no one in western countries has any sense of morality; but the “standards” as espoused and promulgated by the media, entertainment, and government - including especially education - are all in exact opposition to real morality. One has to be a “rebel” to believe in and act on eternal moral verities now.

I am not surprised that beach volleyball, the uniforms are deemed to be a modesty issue. I think the sport started if I am not mistaken, on the beaches of Brazil itself. If I am wrong correct please. Thank-you! God Bless.

I agree that the outfits should cover more skin. I am also disappointed that the female track athletes are wearing low-rise, bikini-style shorts and crop tops. It seems like shorts with a higher waist would be more comfortable, if not for modesty reasons, IMHO.

Check out the swimsuits worn by divers and sync-swimmers. Almost bottomless.

The time for your complaint was at the onset of the sport and not now. Your arguments at this late date cite the example of EGYPTIAN females as being properly attired. Obviously you side with the Moslem cover up with regard to women and pay no attention to the FACT that Bikini’s have been the accepted attire since the inception of the sport!Secondly, playing in hot sand, and the effect of sand on certain parts of the body when it gets into your clothes is VERY uncomfortable. The playing field is SAND as in on a beach and it is easy to brush off sand from the ski, but not to get it out from under clothing.
Inferring that women’s beach volley ball is indecent is a real stretch. The original Olympic Games were played in the NUDE!

It’s not just the beach volleyball that lacks some modesty.

Hey Salvation, you may want to consider asking the Mods to pull this post.

Rather than being a discussion of Msgr. Pope’s thoughts on modesty and morality, this thread’s been hijacked by those who are bringing it down to puerile levels. Sad.

The Msgr. lost all credibility when he included, and then went out of his way to praise the Saracens, who are immaterial to his op-ed.

With all due respect to the Monsignor, many professions wear what's considered a "uniform" of sorts; In the sport of Beach Volleyball, bikinis are traditionally worn...because it IS the beach, and because it is practically nonrestrictive.

But while we're on the subject of functionality and modesty, is there any functionality to the Monsignor's black dress and Pope hats?

"Modesty" of dress would be the Monsignor and Pope sporting a simple pair of trousers and white collared shirt or a semblance of a robe worn during the time of Christ -- instead of flashily designed white or bright purple and magenta outfits embellished with Crucifix-bling.
