With martyrs like this appear again in our modern days as they give their life for Christ?

I think so. (Look at Syria and Iraq.) Soon to come to the United States?

hurled themselves into a vat of burning lime rather than offer homage to Jupiter

There are not many situations where those would be one's only two choices.

I doubt it. I remember going to Midnight Mass in Cairo.
Christians aren't hated by the middle easterners. There have been Catholics there forever.

Google:
The Umayyad Mosque, also known as the Great Mosque of Damascus: A legend dating to the 6th century holds that the building contains the head of John the Baptist. The mosque is also believed by Muslims to be the place where Jesus (Issa) will return.

I SAW it.

The head is encased in a BEAUTIFUL, gold, tall monument, in the shape, kind of, like a 10-foot candle, with the head at the top, wider part.
Imams sit around that head of St. John the Baptist and pray 24/7, changing shifts. They have been doing that for a long time, our guide told us. Who knows how long, but John the Baptist is VENERATED (NOT adored) by Muslims.
