Cardinal Timothy Dolan cuts ties with anti-abortion crusader Frank Pavone

NEW YORK (RNS) In the latest clash between the Catholic hierarchy and one of the church’s leading anti-abortion crusaders, New York Cardinal Timothy Dolan accused the Rev. Frank Pavone of continuing to stonewall on financial reforms, and Dolan said he is cutting ties with his group, Priests for Life.

In a Nov. 20 letter to other U.S. bishops, Dolan said he did not know if the Vatican would now step in to take action against the New York-based priest, who for years has angered various bishops by rejecting oversight of the organization by church authorities and for refusing to sort out his group’s troubled finances.

“My requests of Father Pavone were clear and simple: one, that Priests for Life undergo a forensic audit; two, that a new, independent board be established to provide oversight and accountability,” Dolan wrote in the letter, which was first reported by Catholic World News.

PFL fundraising has gotten increasingly aggressive. I disapprove of their tactics and no longer support them.

Diocesan oversight does NOT help Charity Navigator scores. CN does not consider any priests to be independent of any diocese, making it difficult for CN to recognize any Catholic organization to meet CN’s standards for accountability. Further, PFL has been financially hurt by the heirarchy’s war against them, so their financial score has been dinged.

If Father Pavone is still assigned to the Diocese of Amarillo, Texas which I believe he is, Dolan can pound sand.

When the diocese came around here offering to take over the parish owned and run grade school and high school, the parents filled the auditorium and ran them out on a rail. The parish has a hefty endowment for the schools and didn’t want it diluted in an attempt to save other schools with the result of all the schools failing.

An independent audit of PFL would probably be worthwhile but diocese oversight is not always an advantage.

Where was Dolans oversight and accountability, all during the Horrendus Homosexual abuse of children by Priests which went on for years. While the the Hierarchy were in charge and involved ??????

True. PFL is a 501(c)-3, and AFAIK, they haven't run afoul of the IRS.

The timing of the publication of what essentially amounts to an inter-office communique (in the midst of the year-end "season of giving") is interesting. If a democrat toady wanted to ingratiate himself to Schumer and his ilk, undermining the democrats' arch-enemy PFL with unsubstantiated accusations of financial mismanagement through the publication of such a letter would be a cheap yet effective tactic. It would be interesting to find out who Dolan had in mind to serve on the new, "independent" board he envisioned.

Agree. I am 100% pro-life but I got sick of the endless, weekly letters & emails from PFL soliciting money. It culminated one day when I received notice that I had a certified letter waiting for me at the post office that I needed to sign for. I was a single mother with a full time job....I was scared to death my ex was suing me for custody of my kid. I was certain that’s what the letter was. I made arrangements to leave work early to go pick up this letter, sick in my stomach with thoughts of an impending legal battle for custody of my child. I got the letter, opened it, and saw it was a fundraising letter from Fr Frank. I was irate. I haven’t supported them since.

Got that also. Thought it was a former employer sending me some documents I left there.

Father Pavone struggled mightily to get out of Amarillo and into Dolan’s “protection.”

I got that one, too. I had to leave work early like you to get to the post office on time and was scared that it was a notice of an audit from the IRS (I googled “certified” and saw that an audit was the most common reason for such a letter). I was furious.

I’ve also gotten requests from them via express or priority mail. Just how much did that cost? I’m not going to support an organization that wastes money like that.
