Pope Francis the loser as hardline bishops veto gay-friendly statements

Pope Francis appeared to have lost out to powerful conservatives in the Roman Catholic church on Saturday after bishops scrapped language that had been hailed as heralding a historic opening towards gay people.

In the final report of an extraordinary synod on the family which has exposed deep divides in church hierarchy, there is no mention – as there had been in a draft version – of the “gifts and qualities” gay people can offer.

Nor is there any recognition of the “precious support” gay partners can give each other.

A paragraph entitled “pastoral attention to people of homosexual orientation” – itself a distinctly cooler tone than “welcoming homosexual persons” – refers to church teaching, saying there can be “not even a remote” comparison between gay unions and heterosexual marriage.

“Nevertheless,” it adds, “men and women of homosexual tendencies must be welcomed with respect and sensitivity.” They should not suffer from discrimination, it adds.

"Final report of Roman Catholic extraordinary synod on the family removes talk of ‘welcoming’ gay people".

Good news, for as long as it last. The liberals will never give up.

My husband and I were trying to figure out what those gifts were? Splendid designs of surpluses? As much as I love Michelangelo, I’m still not sure of those Swiss Guard uniforms, lol!

It will actually get better.

As the Church in Africa, built literally on the blood of martyrs who rejected participating in homosexual acts, explodes in both joy and numbers... you will see their influence do nothing but grow and grow.

Don’t look for the Africans to be so ‘tolerant.’

I think they're mis-reporting this, too. Isn't this a half-way progress report?

Regardless, this is a preliminary meeting, leading to another meeting next year. And the pronouncements of these synods are only advisory, anyway.

But it's good news.

I don’t trust him.

Honestly, I wonder sometimes if he should be declared an Anti-Pope before he does serious damage.

Then why even have them?

Glad some there still have faith but with the Pope a communist, the church is doomed.

Here are the papal remarks, filled with unusual clarity. Warning: contains the obligatory jab at traditionalists. But much to like here. Lord, how I miss B16.

As Africa waxes Europe wanes. Where are North and South America going? We need to pray.

The church has to stand its ethical ground - - or else it’s just a political organization led by another community organizer.

Good news for the Catholic Church staying intouch with the Word of God above being culturally current. Good news for a Pope who believes in the Bible. The early church did not take on the world by being world welcoming they went with the idea of “We are in the world but not of it we are of the Kingdom of God.”

Don't be silly. The Kirchneristas and setentistas in Argentina say he's a right-wing reactionary. But what would they know?

I think I understand why you're saying that, but I'm not so sure. I'm still watching --- watching closely ---and waiting.

An we all ought to be praying. Amirite?

"“Nevertheless,” it adds, “men and women of homosexual tendencies must be welcomed with respect and sensitivity.” They should not suffer from discrimination, it adds."

The above statement does not reflect the teachings of Jesus imo. Yes, Matthew 18:21-22 shows that Jesus taught that if repentant sinners ask for forgiveness then forgive them. This is evidenced by 1 Corinthians 6:11 which shows that certain members of that church had evidently repented and accepted God’s grace to turn their lives around.

On the other hand, not only does Matthew 18:15-17 show us that Jesus taught that a congregation is to have zero tolerance for unrepentant sinners, but 1 Corinthians 5 shows us that Paul reprimanded that church for wrongly tolerating fellowship with a sexual offender, verse 11 of that passage showing that Paul said not to even eat with such people.
