I believe, nearly 80% of the Old and New Testaments are read at daily Mass over a period of three years. This is a hold-over from the first centuries when no one had any bible at all so whatever they know they heard in Church.

Actually, it is far less than that. See Lectionary Statistics - How much of the Bible is included in the Lectionary for Mass?.

hey boat.. the King James Bible was commissioned by and originated with Henry VIII, there are a lot of very smart protestant cookies on this forum I bet know that factoid.

Got any links for that assertion? Here is a true factoid:

In 1604, King James I of England authorized that a new translation of the Bible into English be started. It was finished in 1611, just 85 years after the first translation of the New Testament into English appeared (Tyndale, 1526). The Authorized Version, or King James Version, quickly became the standard for English-speaking Protestants. Its flowing language and prose rhythm has had a profound influence on the literature of the past 400 years. The King James Version present on the Bible Gateway matches the 1987 printing. The KJV is public domain in the United States. http://www.biblegateway.com/versions/King-James-Version-KJV-Bible

The King James Version (KJV), commonly known as the Authorized Version (AV) or King James Bible (KJB), is an English translation of the Christian Bible for the Church of England begun in 1604 and completed in 1611.[2] First printed by the King's Printer Robert Barker,[3][4] this was the third translation into English to be approved by the English Church authorities. The first was the Great Bible commissioned in the reign of King Henry VIII (1535),[5] and the second was the Bishops' Bible of 1568.[6] In January 1604, King James VI and I convened the Hampton Court Conference where a new English version was conceived in response to the perceived problems of the earlier translations as detected by the Puritans,[7] a faction within the Church of England.[8]

James gave the translators instructions intended to guarantee that the new version would conform to the ecclesiology and reflect the episcopal structure of the Church of England and its belief in an ordained clergy.[9] The translation was done by 47 scholars, all of whom were members of the Church of England.[10] In common with most other translations of the period, the New Testament was translated from Greek, the Old Testament was translated from Hebrew text, while the Apocrypha were translated from the Greek and Latin. In the Book of Common Prayer (1662), the text of the Authorized Version replaced the text of the Great Bible – for Epistle and Gospel readings – and as such was authorized by Act of Parliament.[11] By the first half of the 18th century, the Authorized Version had become effectively unchallenged as the English translation used in Anglican and Protestant churches. Over the course of the 18th century, the Authorized Version supplanted the Latin Vulgate as the standard version of scripture for English speaking scholars. With the development of stereotype printing at the beginning of the 19th century, this version of the Bible became the most widely printed book in history, almost all such printings presenting the standard text of 1769 extensively re-edited by Benjamin Blayney at Oxford; and nearly always omitting the books of the Apocrypha. Today the unqualifed title 'King James Version' commonly identifies this Oxford standard text, especially in the United States. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Authorized_King_James_Version

King Henry VIII died in 1547. So, no, the KJV was not commissioned by Henry VIII.

Hey boat, I was just called a liar by a protestant.

Hey, lurk, show me where a protestant called you a "liar". As for your games, no thanks. I have better things to do.

If that was the case then why not call it the King Henry Version or KHV for short? Us Prots sure are a convoluted lot aren't we?

Or, maybe, just maybe, it was logically called the King James Version because, well ... King James authorized it?

My wife was excommunicated 40 years ago and I have never been to a church in my life for services. That makes us pretty bad I reckon! We just stick to the bible and not listen too mush to man. :)

Hi R-C,

I was following a thread and what I thought they were discussing was the original version in English of the current KJV of the bible as versus the current original Catholic English translation which was the Dougy-Rheims.

My understanding was the first “official” English translation from the Latin Vulgate was that commissioned by King Henry VIII. Prior to that there was no “English” translation from the Latin.

I agree that the KJV was a subsequent translation of a translation; which initially started with King Henry.

Just like the current version of the Catholic Bible, the New American Bible, is not like the original Dougy-Rheims; so too the current KJV is not like the original translation by Henry VIII’s scholars.

I am sure I will stand corrected by both the protestants and Catholics on this.

Didn't the Kenites accuse Jesus of not knowing David?

Jim, to defend my honor against the accusation of my dishonesty, I would like to make a friendly contest with the proceeds going to you here at FreeRepublic. I have just made a $250 donation and I will make another $750 donation if anyone can disprove my claim that there is more Scripture in a Catholic Mass than in a protestant service on any Sunday.

Hey dan, and anyone else who has the stats....

. Over here....
