While under a secular Communist regime, the people of China are more socially conservative than Americans are on issues like abortion and homosexuality, a poll revealed.
The survey was conducted by Shanghai Jiao Tong University on about 3,500 citizens of the People's Republic of China from 34 cities.
Released on Christmas Day, the survey noted that 68.5 percent of respondents said they considered homosexuality unacceptable.
Also, as reported by Zhao Wen the Shanghai Daily, nearly 60 percent of respondents held a negative opinion of abortion.
"The survey concluded that while the personal values of Chinese people had changed a lot over the past 30 years, traditional values still played a dominant role," wrote Zhao Wen on Thursday.
"Respondents were asked to grade their acceptance of each topic from one to five points. One point meant the behavior was unacceptable while five points meant it was totally compatible with everyday life."

Not surprising. I believe the Communist Party declared homosexuality illegal, seeing it as spreading “western” decadence. Meanwhile, the Chinese have seen firsthand the horrors of the one-child policy and its effects(i.e., the dearth of female Chinese as just one-example) so I’m not surprised by their traditional(and correct) views on these issues.
Maybe the people are, but the government isn’t. Although I heard recently that the government might be relaxing the “only one child” rule.
One shot, one child ... any other pregnancy must be aborted. Doesn’t sound very conservative when it comes to abortion.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t the new president just relax the one-child policy?
Yes, but that is a government policy by the Communist tyranny they have over there. Who knows how the Chinese would actually vote if given the chance.
Good point.
He may have. Even if he did, that policy was in effect for so long, the consequences and repercussions from it are bound to last a very long time.
I believe that China still has their upstairs and downstairs Catholic Churches too.
Upstairs — approved by the commie government
Downstairs — real Catholic Church is China is underground.
There is an opportunity in China that the global conservative cause would be foolish to ignore. The government is weak, which is why it is trying to change policies. It realizes the fate that has befallen every dingle ‘dynasty’ before it is at its door. There are currently more Christians in China than there are Communist Party members, which is a capstone fact on a mountain of unease and impatience with the inflexible regime.
I don’t think we could topple the government, due to a vaguely functioning economy and rising nationalistic hysteria of the Senkaku Islands, but that doesn’t mean conservative forces can’t nudge the government into a more traditionalist and economically free model. Almost 70% of the public feels sodomy is wrong. Would it really be that hard to get Russian-style propaganda laws passed there? Not if we can get ‘values activists’ to engage in the political system.
On baby-killing, the good news is that most of the Party members have to be aware it’s killing them. The gender disparity in China is a demographic time bomb waiting to happen, and they don’t want to see Japan’s problems strike them as well.
Libtards never cease seeking out weak nations globally where they can push their agendas, whether its abortion in Ireland or sodomic ‘marriage’ in France, but we in our nationalism too often neglect conservative brethren overseas who share many of our views and may need support to give us global victories.
What’s more, securing China (looking ahead maybe 40 years), would be the last piece of the triumvirate. We have seen big victories in Russia and India this year while the liberals have gushed over their tiny battles won in Illinois and England and other such areas. Russia, China, and India will be the powers of this century, and will shape the world for the coming centuries as you see the centers of power shift across the globe. If we could secure all three as conservative strongholds in any regard, it would be a major victory.
If there is any lesson we can learn looking back at the Bush and Reagan years, its that you should NEVER squander public opinion when it blows your way.
A dark chapter in human history for sure. I just pray there is light at the end of the tunnel.
I don’t believe it.
For modern Chinese - having an abortion is like going to have your hair done.
“One shot, one child ... any other pregnancy must be aborted.”
Not true. But you do lose all govt. benefits which for 70% of the people means you can not survive.
from wiki:
“The limit has been strongly enforced in urban towns, but the actual implementation varies from location to location.[21] In most rural areas, families are allowed to apply to have a second child if their first-born is a daughter[22] or suffers from physical disability, mental illness, or intellectual disability.[23] Second children are subject to birth spacing (usually 3 or 4 years). Additional children will result in large fines. Families violating the policy are required to pay monetary penalties and may possibly be denied bonuses at their workplace.”
I expect you’d find at least that many Americans who have a “negative opinion of abortion” ... except, you know, when a woman’s pregnant and it would be really hard for her to have the baby ... it’s unpleasant, of course, but she really has no other choice ... (and in China, that’s a lot closer to the truth).
I feel “negatively” about dentistry and colonoscopies.
