John Zachary created a Nativity scene for Claremont United Methodist Church that employs a figure of Trayvon Martin as a commentary on gun violence. Previous scenes have had Mary and Joseph as a homeless couple and as war refugees. You try to put it in a context of how it would be today, Zachary said.
Nativity scenes have a few standard elements: a manger, swaddling clothes, happy parents, sheep, maybe the Three Wise Men. They dont generally include Trayvon Martin.
But there he is, wearing a hoodie, a stream of blood pouring from his chest onto the straw-covered floor of the scene outside Claremont United Methodist Church, the holy family around him.
There is danger in the manger.
For the seventh straight Christmas, the church at 211 W. Foothill Blvd. has turned its Nativity display into a piece of art that comments on our times.
John Zachary, the artist, told me the acquittal in July of George Zimmerman, who fatally shot the 17-year-old African-American in 2012, struck him as a worthy subject for Christmas comment.
For one thing, the backdrop to the Christmas story is the slaughter by King Herod of all infants in Bethlehem, a barbarous attempt to kill the Messiah.
Rather than tidings of comfort and joy, that time of year would have seen other parents in agony because their children had just been killed, a plaque explains.
In searching for photos of Trayvon, Zachary said one of the teenager lying dead on the pavement particularly tore at him.
What if Jesus was lying there bleeding to death? I was kind of thinking of that, Zachary said.
The scene is titled A Child is Born, a Son is Given, the wording outlined in red formed from a pool of blood at Trayvons feet. I suggested to Zachary that he might be melding Christs birth and Crucifixion in one tableau, Easter being the time a son was given.
Easter and Christmas should be tied together. Its all the same story, Zachary said.
Of course, via his substitution, we might ask the question, Did Trayvon Martin die for our sins? Depending on your politics, the answer might be yes. But lets not get too philosophical here.
In contrast to the serene approach of most Nativity scenes, Zachary and Claremont United Methodist aim, year after year, to remind us forcibly that Joseph and Mary were outsiders.
I think the value of this is that it stretches us to think, what does the birth of Christ call us to do? Sharon Rhodes-Wickett, the churchs lead pastor, told me. But even she admits the violence of the scene is unsettling.
I found this years hard to look at. Its hard to look at a young man whos shot and bleeding to death. But even though Im uncomfortable with it, thats the point, Rhodes-Wickett said. We have to take a look at the violence.
Zachary and I met up Monday morning at the Nativity, where he was making a few repairs.
Even if this was an articulated dummy in street clothes and hooded sweatshirt, it was almost painful to watch the artist using a drill on Trayvon Martins forearm. Hadnt the teen suffered enough?
A rod, painted red, between his chest and the floor illustrates a stream of blood.
Zachary, who was wearing a T-shirt with the famous image of a triumphant Muhammad Ali standing over Sonny Liston in the ring, was cheerful and friendly. He talks with the cadences of his native Tennessee.
I grew up in the Methodist church. All my family are Methodist ministers, said Zachary, wholl turn 58 on Jan. 2.
Residents of Claremont, Zachary, his wife and children have been attending Claremont United Methodist for 15 years. He is a Hollywood production designer, who designs, builds and dresses sets for TV and movie productions such as Raising Hope, a Fox sitcom, and My Name is Earl, a former NBC comedy.
Church leaders approached him in 2007 about creating and building a Nativity. Zachary began planning a typical scene. Then he had second thoughts.
Christmas traditions of gifts, celebration and warmth reflect privilege, Zachary said, and theres a lot of people who dont have that privilege. Maybe I should do something thats provocative, thats more in keeping with the teachings of Jesus.
That first year, he updated the Nativity concept, making Joseph and Mary a modern homeless couple on a ghetto street. The backdrop was a wall of graffiti.
It was appropriate historically. They were homeless refugees, Zachary noted. You try to put it in a context of how it would be today.
The scene struck a chord in the community. Elementary school students left notes of support, and a shopping cart in the scene was spontaneously filled with grocery items, which the church used for its food bank.
It was received very well. From then on Ive kept it in the contemporary context, Zachary said.
His subsequent scenes turned Mary, Joseph and Jesus into war refugees in Iraq, flanked by American soldiers, against a bombed-out wall with the slogan Peace on Earth (2008); into Mexican migrants halted by the U.S. border wall (2009); into an African-American woman holding her infant, sans Joseph, in a prison cell (2010); and again (2012) into a homeless couple, outside a chain-link fence that Zachary took down on Christmas Day to show their inclusion.
2011s scene skipped the Nativity, instead depicting the outlines of three couples, two of them same-sex, each holding hands, under the wording Christ is Born. The figures of the two same-sex couples were later knocked over, which police investigated as a hate crime, although Zachary said "it was probably just kids or something.
This years scene looks traditional at first glance. Joseph and Mary are in silhouette inside a wooden shelter against a backdrop that resembles stained glass.
Zachary said: If you drive by, you think, oh, thats nice. Then you think, whats that black kid doing there? So you take a look.
The scene went up Dec. 8 and will come down Jan. 5. Response has been muted.
I thought this would be more controversial, but I come to find out people dont really like people gettin shot, Zachary said with a chuckle. They may not agree what to do about it, but they agree its a bad thing.
As we spoke in front of the scene, which is along a Foothill frontage road between a bank and a theology school, motorists cruised past for a look.
Anthony and Gloria Huerta parked and tried to take the scene in. Gloria focused on the angels. Anthony thought Trayvon was a zombie inserted by a prankster.
Once Zachary explained the scene, the Pomona couple seemed to appreciate his approach.
Theyre not going to go crazy on you here. Its Claremont, Gloria assured him.
Later, retiree Viola Saunders of La Verne parked and walked up. She didnt look pleased. Its pretty bad, she remarked.
Saunders said her friends at Pomona First Baptist Church were buzzing about the scene. It takes away from the original, Saunders said before walking back to her car.
A couple of minutes later, she returned to take photos on her phone. She wasnt sure they turned out. Zachary politely took down her address and promised to mail her photos.
I can see where youre coming from, Saunders told him, although she was still of the opinion the Nativity is too sacred to modify.
Rhodes-Wickett said her congregation, which meets in a sanctuary designed by architect Richard Neutra, is progressive. Most people like something that makes us think and makes us search our hearts, she said.
Some people think its too edgy. I understand that point of view, she added. I dont know what the future will bring, but at this point its an annual thing.
Zachary said his faith has been deepened by the act of creating the scenes.
As Ive done these, Christmas has become more meaningful to me, Zachary said. Its become deeper but not so literal.
did the wisemen being Skittles, MJ and purple drank?

One of them brought blunts, I’m sure. The others might have.
Yes, because Trayvon was so much like Jesus, right? (/s) Seems that messing around with nativity scenes is not a very good way to keep the “reason for the season”.
You’re not familiar with the United Methodists?
The boy ain’t right in the head.
Perpetuating the myth to suit the revisionist socialist agenda.s
If racial unrest follows Zimmerman jury decision, blame it on Activist Obama

This is reference to an editorial run in Canada Free Press. The Canadians got it right.! Too bad half of the so called conservatives talk show hosts Ive been listening to cant seem to be willing to connect the dots to what a heavy hand his imperious highness played in this example of socialist justice meted out to serve the policies of the state . Turning this into a show trial replete with wall to wall tv coverage.. Taking some poor guy of mixed race including black doing his job and painting a target on his back to fullfill a socialist agenda.
The truth and purpose behind the Zimmerman persecution .. The regime and the media set the premise for the trial narrative and their presentations ignoring the setting where the incident took place..An area having a Neighborhood Watch and the person working security just doing his job. Why was this episode politicized ?...The first was to gin up the base for purposes explained herein ..
If some of those so called conservative talk show hosts had interviewed guests who run such watches and had the courage to fight PC and defend Zimmerman they would have exposed the regime and the media for the frauds they are. The few who are still milking this by accepting black callers. While they are commentators and not bonafide “newspersons” nothing was stopping them from offering the facts for discussion.
Allowing callers to mis-state the facts such as as Martin was stalked or Martin was stopped and questioned when there was no legal right to do so.If the aftermath of this insidious revisionist assult were investigated everyone of the perpetrators in this recent rash of racial killings would state they believe this is true. . Instead these hosts fail to cite the simple facts outlined and documented here, allow the callers miss-conceptions go unchallanged, or cite examples of policy or corruption let alone ask them what has Obama done for you? Or even dismiss them as unfortunately being used and deliberately mis-informed..
Particularly a gated neighborhood watch. When you enter one of these and start wandering around no matter if you are white, blue, red, green, or black. You can be asked your purpose for being there. You are on private property. And yes those on patrol can and do leave their vehicle and follow on foot if they lose sight of the person theyre observing..Thats the Watch Captains who is really a security guards job.http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-bloggers/3054721/posts
The person of mixed race including black working security was attacked on private rights of way while on foot who discontinued an observation and was returing to his vehicle after being suggested by the police to do so.
Legally he could have approached Saint Trayvon but didnt..The hooded tall figure was allowed to continue on his way.unimpeded. But didnt. That figure turned out to be a Martin Trayvon who doubled back and attacked the neighborhood watch worker as he was returing to his vehicle. Knocked him to the ground and began beating him severly. Saint Trayvon, the attacker, was subsequently killed in a struggle over the Neighborhood Watchmans legal pistol.
Both were dark skined and could pass as cousins.
The facts of this case are still being shamefully being concealed by the media to the extent they are advancing and are complicit in permitting a putrid injstice of the worst order, organized and instituted by our governent, to be committed .
While denied. It began as a miscalculation when a surname of a Jewish origin shot up and lighted the heavens like a star shell in the darkest of nights. It would have been difused if the media used pictures of both side by side because they look like cousins. And the area where this occured of paycheck to paycheck struggling homeowners of all races trying to protect themselves had been reported and not some ritzy all white enclave.they portrayed..
Worse yet the media is still pilling it on with ABC editing a a black jury members (remember when they were all white)t remarks to make it sound like she accused Zimmerman of murder .

The result as we have seen is that another marxist axiom (division) has been implemented which has resulted with gangs of black youths murdering happless whites and hispanics who happen into areas usually where a black population is the majority. Those media outlets who by their delberate misuse of the instrument of the 1st amendment are just as complicit in those deaths as the regime is.
Particularly the black media which had the duty but not the obligation to verify and report factually. But instead quoted the reports from various mainlining socialist media sources: Some examples here all of which serve the first purpose of selecting Zimmerman as the target. What is the result ?
Black youths believing they would get top level peer approval began attacking happless white and hispanics which may have wandered into their area which resulted in murders or serious injury and some cases stalked their white victims.
In reality these victims are martyrs to the cause of American socialism.,and the political opposition says nothing..
The entire area must be awfully “liberal” i.e degenerate to allow this display to go un-protested.
Blasphemy is blasphemy regardless of what this puke or his relatives think.
This year its trayvonne....what’s next years “blasphemy du jour” going to be.
ah perhaps the FUKISHIMA nuclear plant will take trayvonnes place.
In words, The display is simply BLASPHEMOUS, a typical Marxist stunt to use religious symbolism for their ends while disposing of the actual message. Pontius Pilot did essentially the same kind of thing when he released Barabas instead of Jesus.
No room at the Section 8 Inn!
I grew up in Chino, which is in the same general area as Claremont. Someone would’ve handed you your head for something like this back in those days.
Allow me to pile on- I’m sick of the UMC. Their social justice wing (hopefully) will continue to drive people away.
I live in what can best be described as a county wide “progressive” “ghetto” in Northern CA...where a full 90 percent of the population voted for obama twice...
Were this fiasco to have occurred here....there would be at least a few people protesting it openly and loudly.
the fact that its accepted as some sort of NORM...anywhere scares me half to death
every time I reveiw this morons statements abut hsi so called art....I find another nugget of pure stupidity:
“What if Jesus was lying there bleeding to death? I was kind of thinking of that, Zachary said.
he was “KIND of” thinking...but mostly NOT.
perhaps hes SO stoned and out of touch hes confused EASTER...with Christmas?
That ain’t edgy that’s crazy
