Featured Term (selected at random:

JECHONIAH (also spelled Jeconiah, Jeconias, Jehoiachin)

The son and successor of King Jehoiakim of Judah (Jeremiah 24:1). Shortly after ascending the throne in 598 B.C., he was taken captive by Nebuchadnezzar and exiled to Babylon with his family and followers. There is no evidence that he ever returned, although he enjoyed considerable freedom (II Chronicles 36:10). After thirty-seven years of exile he was released from prison by Nebuchadnezzar's successor and was well taken care of for the rest of his life (II Kings 25:27-30).

He was not in prison — he was exiled and enjoyed a relative freedom during those years.

It is interesting to note that the bible describes Jeconiah as the reason for or at least being responsible for the curse that broke the line of succession in the kings.

The source being: Jeremiah 22:24 “As I live,” says the Lord, “though you, Coniah[a] son of Jehoiakim, the king of Judah, were a signet ring on My right hand, I would tear you from it.

Later the curse was reversed with Zerubbabel rebuilding the temple:
Haggai 2:20-23

New International Version (NIV)

Zerubbabel the Lord’s Signet Ring

20 The word of the Lord came to Haggai a second time on the twenty-fourth day of the month: 21 “Tell Zerubbabel governor of Judah that I am going to shake the heavens and the earth. 22 I will overturn royal thrones and shatter the power of the foreign kingdoms. I will overthrow chariots and their drivers; horses and their riders will fall, each by the sword of his brother.

23 “‘On that day,’ declares the Lord Almighty, ‘I will take you, my servant Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel,’ declares the Lord, ‘and I will make you like my signet ring, for I have chosen you,’ declares the Lord Almighty.”

The Signet Ring is an absolute sign of the Kings authority and even today is used in some countries and even by the Pope to convey his authority through an authorized representative.

The Curse is the main reason that no one other than Christ Himself can fulfill all of the requirements of exactly who the Messiah is. The two varying descriptions of Christ’s lineage in the Gospels traces his roots both through his mother’s side as a physical inheritance and through his adoptive father’s side as a legal inheritance.

Christ holds both legal rights and no one else possibly ever could.

It is interesting to note that Israel even today traces parentage through the mother’s side and uses that to determine whether one is a Jewish descendant or not. It is the mothers side which carries the most weight.
