MARITAL SEPARATION

Temporary or even permanent separation of husband and wife, without the right of remarriage until the death of one of the parties. Permitted by the Church on account of adultery, loss of faith, or other grave reasons. Cohabitation ceases but the marriage bond remains.

The couple may also obtain a civil divorce to legally settle property and child-custody issues ... but the matrimonial bond remains.
