South Africa's Nobel peace laureate Archbishop Desmond Tutu says he will never worship a "homophobic God" and will rather go to hell.
The retired archbishop was speaking at the launch of a UN-backed campaign in South Africa to promote gay rights.
Despite sex-same relationships being legal in South Africa, it had some of the worst cases of homophobic violence, UN human rights chief Navi Pillay said.
Archbishop Tutu, 81, is a long-standing campaigner for gay rights.
'Toilet brush attack'
He retired as Archbishop of Cape Town in 1996, but has remained the moral conscience of the nation, correspondents say.
Same-sex relationships are illegal in more than a third of countries around the world and punishable by death in five, Ms Pillay said.
In Africa, homosexual acts are still a crime in 38 countries, according to the rights group Amnesty International.
"I would refuse to go to a homophobic heaven. No, I would say sorry, I mean I would much rather go to the other place," Archbishop Tutu said at the launch of the Free and Equal campaign in Cape Town.
"I would not worship a God who is homophobic and that is how deeply I feel about this."(continued)

Rom 9:13
He needn’t have any concerns about his eventual destination, he’s figured it out as accurately as any human being is capable (Hell).
The proper headline should be:
“Former Anglican Archbishop Desmond Tutu Rejects God, Asks To Be Cast Into Hell”
Former Anglican Archbishop Desmond Tutu Rejects God, Asks To Be Cast Into Hell
Accurate but sad.
A man who says, "I would rather go to Hell," will get his 'druthers.'
Only a man who neither loves God nor fears Satan would make such an idiotic statement.
This Jew-hating douchebag is going to hell anyway.
What a reckless statement. If Tutu had any idea how utterly horrible Hell will be, he might want to reconsider his stance. I think it will be infinitely worse than anyone can endure, but endure it they must. He needs to repent, because My opinion is, he never has.
he is going to Hell already....
he doesn’t need to “prefer it” now....
Genesis 12:3
He must think hell is tolerable. Not having been there personally I have read enough to know it is not. Not only is it intolerable, it is unimaginable pain, suffering and sorrow. No thanks. Another lost and deceived soul who really isn’t a believer after all. Making war on God never ends well I’m afraid
God may give him a pass for being a “low-information” theologian, but I doubt it.
A man like Tutu can’t easily repent; his heart was turned over to a reprobate mind years ago.
He reminds me of what Ted Turner said some time ago:
“I’d like to see a religion where everybody was good. Not just the members of that sect. I mean I’m sick of it. Heaven is going to be a mighty slender place. And most of the people I know in life aren’t going to be there. There are a few notable exceptions and I’ll miss them. (Laughter) Remember, heaven is going to be perfect. And I don’t really want to be there...Those of us that go to hell, which will be most of us in this room, most journalists are certainly going there. (Laughter). Anyway, because they are not that religious because they know too much. But, when we get there we’ll have a chance to make things better because hell is supposed to be a mess. And heaven is perfect. Who wants to go to a place that’s perfect? Boring, boring.” (Laughter)
Yes friend. They don’t get it I guess and it’s truly frightening. Why are they putting themselves out as holy men and then proclaim such a thing? They will be held acountable for all the souls they deceive into believing they know better than The Lord about his creation and how He ordered it. It’s enough to make you cry more so for his gullible followers, right off the cliff
He may have already passed the point of no return, but only God knows for sure.
phobia=irrational fear of _________
omnipotent=all powerful
Couple of question for you Tu:
Do you believe God is omnipotent?
How can an Omnipotent God have an irrational fear of ________ (fill in the blank of your choice)?
Put another way, can He have a fear and remain omnipotent?
“....but has remained the moral conscience of the nation....”
.
It’s not saying much of that poor nation.
Suspect Mr Tutu will get a chance to test his theorem.
