Pope explains name, urges 'church for the poor'

VATICAN CITY (AP) — The focus of Pope Francis' papacy began to emerge Saturday as he offered some intimate insights into the conclave that elected him pontiff, describing how he was immediately inspired to name himself after St. Francis of Assisi because he wants to see a church that is "for the poor."

His comments provided further evidence that this first Latin American papacy would be one that looks beyond the confines of the church itself to the most disadvantaged, named for a 13th-century friar who renounced a wealthy, dissolute lifestyle to embrace a life of poverty and simplicity and go out in the countryside to preach a message of joy and peace.....

The Catholics are good with the poor. While I was a Catholic prodigal in the Methodist church I kept asking them where was the mission to the poor? They had some dopey mission to people overseas, but the poor never entered their minds.

I attended a UMC church during my first marriage, including being married in that church. Grew up in the ALC and LCA, as well as one year in a LCMS school. Was shocked at how left-wing the Methodists were.

As long as the church pays for it. For the last couple of decades they have done nothing but lobby and urge the government for higher taxes on us all to pay for it.

I don’t know what you said, but I guess Methodists must be pretty terrible people.

What I said was, while I was a prodigal from the Catholic church, I kept asking the Methodists where was their mission to the poor? They were more concerned with paying the conference and raising the drug addled pastor’s salary than with helping the poor and did not understand my Q at all.

I'm not Methodist, but I can't make any sense of what you are saying either, other than your total dislike and animosity towards them, that manages to come out.

Your problem was putting the concepts “Methodists” and “minds” in the same sentence. (former Methodist speaking.)

Was shocked at how left-wing the Methodists were.

All the right-wingers were driven out of that church in the 70s thru 90s. Before then, it was a socially conservative church. However, the leadership had been corrupted starting in the 1920s, and it's amazing that it took 50 years to completely overtake the pews.

Excerpts from The Congressional Record on
Investigation of Communist Activities in the New York City Area
(Parts 6-8)
Hearing Before The Committee on Un-American Activities
House of Representatives, 83rd Congress, First Session
July 7 and 8, and July 13 and 14, 1953

The Methodist Federation for Social Action, originally called the Methodist Federation for Social Service, was first organized by a group of Socialist, Marxist clergymen of the Methodist church headed by Dr. Harry F. Ward. Dr. Ward was the organizer, for almost a lifetime its secretary and actual leader. He at all times set its ideological and political pattern. Its objective was to transform the Methodist Church and Christianity into an instrument for the achievement of socialism. It was established in 1907, 12 years before the organization of the Communist Party in the United States in 1919... The inner hard core of the Methodist Federation consisted...of a Communist cell headed by Ward, which functioned under the direction of the Communist Party.

Missions and Marxism
During the 1980’s, United Methodist Church missionaries toiled in Nicaragua, not planting churches or winning souls, but flaking for the Sandinista experiment with Central American Marxism.  Today, some of those missionaries have reemerged to agitate for Honduras’ ousted leftist President Manuel Zelaya... The Methodist missionaries in Nicaragua during the 1980’s worked for a pro-Sandinista relief group, CEPAD, which was also funded by the United Methodist General Board of Global Ministries.   Said one CEPAD official in 1984:  “We not only support the Sandinista government, but we are immersed in the revolution.”

The Methodists, Alinsky and Hillary Clinton
Chronicles the story of Hillary's roots in Methodism and seduction into "critical theory" and Marxism...

I'm not Methodist, but I can't make any sense of what you are saying either, other than your total dislike and animosity towards them...

Trust me, the founders of Methodism (John, Charles and Susanna Wesley, and Francis Asbury, in the 1700s) are rolling in their graves at what is taking place now. It was a beautiful community for two hundred years... and then...

See post 16.

I was thinking a little smaller, the little interaction that I had on this thread that was so unconvincing, not the entire denomination and history of the Methodist church.

He sure had me fooled because I tended to think he might be honoring another Jesuit who also was of a Southern Hemisphere background and who in my look see was as much in tune with Pope Francis and working with the poor and underprivileged St. Francis of Assisi who was of the Franciscan order of the Church. I’m thinking about St. Francis of Xavier.
