"Cardinal Bergoglio said the challenge to eradicate poverty could not be truthfully met as long as the poor continue to be dependents of the State. The government and other organizations should instead work to create the social conditions that will promote and protect the rights of the poor and enable them to be the builders of their own future, he explained.

He has stood against the Liberation Theology Marxists in the Jesuits for over 40 years. That's why the Left blogosphere is ringing with cries of "Fascist!"

As Archbishop, Bergoglio was linked to Comunione e Liberazione, a conservative Church group. The founders of the University branch of C+L were Catholic students at the University of Milan back in the "revolutionary years" of 1968-69 who regularly got beat up by the Marxist student groups. They survived a lot and are real all-around "build a Culture of Life" guys, and of course anti-Marxist.

The official C+L website

They are a lay organization but they were founded by a priest, Don Luigi Giussani, who started out just by challenging students: "Jesus Christ: who do YOU say that He is?" Pretty back to basics.

This guy Francis I sounds like a really, really good choice.

We had C&L in our parish in Norman, OK. Some of my friends were involved. It seems like a very positive movement.
