"I would first like to say that the newly elected Pope Francis was mentored by one of our priests, Stepan Chmil who is now buried in the basilica of St. Sophia in Rome. Today’s Pope, during his time as a student of the Salesian school, awoke many hours before his classmates to concelebrate at our Divine Liturgy with Fr. Stepan. He knows our Tradition very well, as well as our Liturgy."

Sweet! Lovely, lovely liturgy! A real treasure in the Church.
Good news. I think we will see outreach to the Orthodox, as well, and it’s one of the reasons that Pope Francis kept referring to himself as the Bishop of Rome. This is a title that the Orthodox like, and while they need to do more to come to an understanding of the authority of the Bishop of Rome, it’s a helpful signal to them that he knows them and their style.
The Jesuits, btw, had a mission to Russia and actually were basically “in charge” of a tiny branch of the Catholic Byzantine rite, which was the Russian-usage church. It only had a few churches in the US - in New York and San Francisco, both places with large displaced Russian populations and, oddly enough, St Louis - and when I knew them, the priests there were extremely orthodox. One, Fr. Karl Patzelt, had actually spent many years in a Russian prison camp. He was German, and because he had been a seminarian at the time, he had been drafted into the GErman army and made a stretcher bearer during the war. When he was captured, he was sent to the prison camp and was kept there for a long time after the war was over, during which time he decided that his mission would be to the Russians. When he was finally released, he attended the Russicum (Russian College) in Rome and was ordained a priest in the Byzantine Rite. He spent the rest of his career working among exile communities, and also serving as chaplain to a community of Carmelite nuns in California who were preparing to go to Russia if it ever opened up. (I don’t know if they did.)
Unfortunately, I think the Russian use church got caught up in the problems of the Jesuit order and they basically abandoned it; the priests, the last time I had any contact with them, were not Jesuits but seemed to be ecclesiastical flotsam assigned by the local ordinaries, and some of them had problems of both a doctrinal and a moral nature. I guess if the bishops could find somebody who happened to know the Liturgy of St John Chrysostom, that was sufficient for them...
But perhaps it has improved, and maybe the Jesuits have even taken it up again. During the really bad times, btw, the other San Francisco Jesuits hated Fr Karl and wouldn’t even speak to him in the dining room at the Jesuit residence at USF, which was where the Russian rite priests were technically in residence (although he actually lived in the rectory attached to the church, which was named Our Lady of Fatima).
