Is it not at least as likely, if not much more so, that he was thinking of St. Francis Xavier? That's what I think, too. I haven't heard anyone say which it is.
Maybe he'll never tell.

I will never forget this image prior to the white smoke. I had come home for lunch and turned on the news to see what was happening and this was on. I said, "This is our next Pope". I so hope that Pope Francis remains and continues to live a life of humility and charity in the example of his namesake and in the name of Jesus. And am so hopefilled for our church.

I do think he was thinking of both saints, one who who reforms and one who did missionary work.

I call Pope Francis, a “spiritual hybred”, a Jesuit who has a Francisian spirituality.

He looks very overwhelmed, his face. But then again, he most likely was not expecting to become Pope, instead he most likely thought, he would go home, take the bus again, go back to that apartment, cook his own meals again, not accept the calling by God to become Pope.

Very interesting.
There was an article about Pope Benedict XVI that someone posted here recently. I think it was a priest who wrote it.
He said that during B16’s first Mass in the square, he himself witnessed a raven fly over the square. Then he went on to say that the raven is associated with St. Benedict.

How amazing that this picture was on right before the white smoke. There are a lot of coincidences here.
