Catholic Word of the Day: PATRIARCHATE, 02-07-13
CatholicReference.net ^ | 02-07-13 | Fr. John Hardon's Modern Catholic Dictionary

Featured Term (selected at random):

PATRIARCHATE

The territory ruled ecclesiastically by a patriarch. Rome, Alexandria, Antioch were the first to enjoy patriarchal rights. The Pope as patriarch of the West holds jurisdiction over all the western lands where Latin was once the professional and liturgical language, where the Roman Rite is now used almost exclusively and Roman canon law still obtains. In the East the patriarchates have become organizations of Catholics observing different rites. The original Eastern patriarchates are now represented by a loose federation of Churches differing in liturgies and customs but united in faith, morals, and communion with the Holy See.

“The original Eastern patriarchates are now represented by a loose federation of Churches differing in liturgies and customs but united in faith, morals, and communion with the Holy See.”

ROFLOL. The overwhelming majority of Eastern Christians are either Eastern Orthodox or Oriental Orthodox NOT in communion with Rome. Those few that are in communion with Rome have histories that deal with collusion with invaders. The Maronites are a special case.

However, claiming the “original Eastern patriarchs” are represented by the Eastern Catholic “Churches” is ridiculous and ignores both history and the overwhelming majority of Eastern Christians.
