People Need to Believe in Miracles, Says Woman Cured of Infection

VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- Though she had always believed in miracles, Sharon Smith never dreamed she would be the recipient of one.

Her unexplained recovery from a near fatal infection in 2005 was the second miracle that cleared the way for the Oct. 21 canonization of Blessed Marianne Cope.

Smith will present Pope Benedict XVI a relic of Blessed Marianne -- a bone fragment housed in a wooden tau cross, or T-shaped cross that is the symbol of St. Francis, the inspiration of Mother Marianne's congregation.

A native of Syracuse, N.Y., Smith fainted in her home one day in 2005 and woke up two months later in St. Joseph's Hospital, her body perforated by tubes as doctors fought to keep her hydrated and alive. She had been diagnosed with pancreatitis, but the inflammation soon caused an infection so severe, it ate away part of her gastrointestinal tract.

Her doctor told her that July, "Sharon, you're not going to make it," she told Catholic News Service in Rome Oct.19. She and about 90 others from the Diocese of Syracuse, including Bishop Robert J. Cunningham, came to Rome for the canonization.

Smith recalled that a friend visiting her at the hospital was given a prayer card of Mother Marianne and told to pray for her intercession. Mother Marianne had been beatified by Pope Benedict in May 2005.

"My friends told me they prayed for me the night before they were going to just disconnect me" from the respirator, "and they prayed to Mother Marianne for me," she said.

The next day, "I woke up in the morning and started talking," she said.

Though she could breathe on her own, the infection was still severe.

St. Francis Sister Michaeleen Cabral and other members of the community soon started praying for Blessed Marianne's intercession.

I have NO DOUBT that I recently had a medical diagnosis that would have gone unnoticed and probably been fatal had it not been due to Divine Intervention. I believe that my late mother and father are sort of guardian angels for me.

While I've had a number of chronic health issues over the last few years, I've been fighting crohns disease with constant flare ups. This has resulted in my gastroenterologist sending me to another doctor at KU Medical Center. My flares have resulted in severe anemia and iron deficiency. The new doctor sent me to a hematologist to diagnose these problems, and come up with a treatment strategy. Just 2 weeks before, I had gotten a "clean bill of health" from my family care doctor (given the low iron & anemia.)

So I'm meeting with this new doctor at KU's Bloch Cancer Center, and as she interviews me, she becomes suspicious and sends me across the hall to get an ultrasound of my legs, and finds I have blood clots in my right calf. Due to that, she immediately sent me up to have a CAT scan of my chest, and low and behold, I have at least 3 blood clots in my lungs (pulmonary embolisms.) She immediately made arrangements for me to be admitted to the KU Medical Center hospital, and I was immediately put on oxygen and blood thinners. I was also given a blood transfusion before I was released from the hospital.

From what I've been told, the way most people find out they have PEs are from a heart attack, a stroke, or from a autopsy.

I'm convinced that it was Divine Intervention that allowed me to see that specific doctor who was able to "connect the dots" on that specific date, diagnosing a potentially fatal condition before it was too late.

I note that all miracles we hear about involve single persons and maladies inside their bodies. I never hear of miracles involving two or more people and the maladies, for lack of a better word, between (among) them.

I'm not a Bible expert, but I never heard of Jesus healing the physical and mental illnesses of groups.

Just some individual souls who were fortunate enough to land in his path or awareness, did he heal from the accounts.

I used to wonder why he did not heal everyone, but then I understood the rule of creation that God gives people free will and if they chose to worship another god and reject Him, He allows man that authority over his own soul and life.

But then you have to ask why does He not heal all the people who pray to Him for healing and then die. Some Christians say it is because it was their time to die - their life's work was done and it was time for them to move on. idk. I do know that I have witnessed and received miracle healings. I saw the chicken pox disappear and I saw a man's pneumonia disappear, for example. Many others, too.

I wasn’t talking about group therapies, I was talking about maladies that affect relationship between (among) people.

Oh, I think I see. :)

Like, why did not Jesus wipe out Leprosy instead of just healing individual Lepers. Is that right?

No, I’m not making myself clear. I meant curing relationships, conflicts, not body diseases.

He gave us the solution to all wounded relationships. Alot of people reject that healing. But maybe someday. :)

Praise God for that miracle finding and healing.

My late longtime boyfriend or SO had PE’s that went to his lungs, even with the best of treatment and it was thought he was recovering for the better when a “rouge” blood clot went to his heart and killed him.

While I have come to terms that his time on earth as well as his work was done, I still struggle will his sudden and very sad passing.
