What Did CHA's Carol Keehan Know and When Did She Know It?

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama on Feb. 10 confirmed that his administration was offering an “accommodation” to religious groups opposed to a controversial federal rule requiring private health plans to provide contraception and abortion services.

As reported in the media, church-affiliated employers would not have to directly cover those services; instead, their insurance plans would cover them.

The announcement prompted an expression of gratitude from Daughter of Charity Sister Carol Keehan, the president and CEO of the Catholic Health Association, and a polite, but wary response from the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, which said they needed to study the proposed modification.

That evening, the bishops’ conference formally rejected the president’s “accommodation” as essentially meaningless.

For the rest of the weekend, amid a blur of news headlines and talking heads that offered conflicting judgments, the faithful in the pews struggled to determine what, if anything, had changed regarding the administration’s policy.

The contrasting responses from the CHA leader and the USCCB have left Catholics and the general public confused about who speaks for the Church on a matter of grave institutional concern and whether the Obama administration exploited a lack of clarity about that matter.

The dueling positions have fueled questions about the basis of Sister Carol’s endorsement: USCCB officials and health-care experts have since confirmed that the government has not issued any binding regulations that legally override the controversial contraception mandate finalized by the Department of Health and Human Services on Jan. 20.

Subsequent media coverage and interviews suggest that while the White House cleared its talking points with Sister Carol in advance of the president’s public address, the USCCB had been excluded from the administration’s deliberations.

Two more questions:

1. Who is Sister Carol's bishop?

2. Why is he missing in action?

Keehan is a whore. I won’t disrespect the title by calling her a “Sister”.

CHA does not speak for the Catholic Church. Sisters do not speak for the Catholic Church.

Just as Judas and the high priests of the temple betrayed Jesus to the Romans, these so called Catholic organizations headed by Seehan and the Bishops will betray the inalienable rights of every American.

The issue is not religion or health care. It is political freedom.

...instead, their insurance plans would cover them.

But the churches will still have to pay for the insurance, right? I don't see any difference or "compromise". Boy, if this was Bush, the "news" media would be all over this, saying that it is no compromise. But now, they carry water for their boy-king.

The Catholic Health Association is nothing but a trade group. The USCCB is the organization of BISHOPS of the Catholic Church in America, and when in Communion with the Vatican, THEY speak for the Church in the United States.

Here’s the latest from Sister Keehan at the CHUSA web site. It sounds like she is realizing she was used and deceived by the administration.

Something has to be fixed
By SR. CAROL KEEHAN, DC
CHA president and chief executive officer

CHA and its members were profoundly disappointed to learn that the definition of a religious employer was not going to be broadened in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ rules for preventive services for women.

The impact of being told we do not fit the new definition of a religious employer and therefore cannot operate our ministries following our consciences has jolted us. The contributions of Catholic health care, education and social services to this country’s development are legion. They have responded to the needs of all, not just Catholics. They have been delivered by many who do not share our faith, but share our commitment.

From President Thomas Jefferson to President Barack Obama, we have been promised a respect for appropriate religious freedom. The first amendment to our Constitution affirms it. We are a pluralistic country, and it takes respectful dialogue to sort this out fairly. This decision was a missed opportunity.

CHA has expressed concern and disappointment about this on behalf of the ministry. We have said the problem is not resolved, and we must have a national conversation on this. CHA is working closely with the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Catholic Relief Services, Catholic Charities USA, the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities and others to look at options to resolve this. We will be discussing it at the CHA board meeting on Feb. 8.

I assure you that we will use the time to pursue a correction during the one-year extension. We will give this issue priority and consult with members and experts as we evaluate options to deal with this. Any suggestions, comments or questions are welcome. I promise to keep the membership informed as we move along in this effort. Please keep this important effort in your prayers as well.

Apparently Sister Keehan thinks she does speak authoritatively for the Catholic Church.

Sister Carol Keehan's "Hero For Choice"?

Submitted by Editor on Mon, 02/13/2012 - 7:24pm

Rockford, Il – 2-13-2012 – by Rockford Pro-Life Initiative -

An email, sent to Sister Carol Keehan of the Catholic Health Association, mocking Catholic Bishops and thanking Sister Keehan for being a "hero for choice" and "standing up to the Bishops" from a Pro-Abortion group called Riverside For Choice, was responded to personally by Sister Keehan with a "thank you very much."

Sister Keehan and the Catholic Health Association have vigorously defended Obama care and the false compromise in which President Obama is mandating all insurance companies, including Catholic ones, to offer free of charge contraceptives, sterilizations, and abortion-causing drugs.

What is so disturbing about Sister Keehan's response to this email from a clearly pro-abortion group is that the email thanks Sister Keehan for supporting abortion, standing against the Bishops, and calling Sister an inspiration to those in the pro-abortion community. Her only response is "thank you so much.".....

This statement was prepared efore the “compromise” announced by 0 on Friday February 10. Note that it references plans to discuss at a meeting of February 8th.

If this was published in a journal on 2/15 it was prepared well in advance of that date. I think we can assume that Keehan has made no repentance on the matter.
