Catholic politicians who attack Church should remember God’s judgment
cna ^ | February 11, 2012 | David Kerr

Posted on 02/13/2012 6:36:44 AM PST by NYer

Rome, Italy, Feb 11, 2012 / 01:46 pm (CNA/EWTN News).-

Politicians who consider themselves Catholic but collaborate in “the assault against their faith” should remember they will one day have to give account for their acts before God, Bishop Daniel Jenky of Peoria, Illinois said Feb 10.

“There is a last judgment. There is a particular judgment. May they change their minds and may God have mercy on them,” he told CNA during his visit to Rome.

When asked specifically about recent actions of Democratic Health and Human Services Secretary Sebelius Kathleen Sebelius and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, Bishop Jenky replied “I am utterly scandalized.”

“The Lord once said ‘if you deny me at the end, I will deny you,’ this from our most merciful, good Savior. And so if it is a choice between Jesus Christ and political power or getting favorable editorials in leftist papers, well, that’s simply not a choice.”

Both Sebelius and Rep. Pelosi have been at the forefront of attempts to force Catholic institutions to cover contraception, sterilizations and abortifacients as part of their staff’s health insurance plans.

Bishop Jenky said there are too many Catholic politicians in the U.S. who “like to wear green sweaters on St. Patrick’s Day and march” or “have their pictures taken with the hierarchy” or “have conspicuous crosses on their forehead with ashes” but who then “not only do not live their faith they collaborate in the assault against their faith.”

The 64-year-old Chicago native is currently making his “ad limina” visit to Rome to discuss the state of his diocese with the Pope and the Vatican. He is part of a larger episcopal delegation from the states of Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin. Bishop Jenky said the issue of religious freedom in the United States has featured in all their meetings so far, including their audience with Pope Benedict XVI Feb. 9.

“Determined secularists see the Catholic Church as the largest institutional block to a completely secularized society and not for the first, and probably not for the last time, we’re under assault,” he said drawing parallels with the anti-Catholic “Kulturkampf” in late 19th century Germany or the anti-clerical laws in France in the early 20th century.

“I am a Holy Cross religious and my own community had six colleges in France and they turned our mother house chapel into a stable,” he said. As for the United States in 2012, “it is always difficult to predict the future but the intensity of hatred against Catholic Christianity in elements of our culture is just astounding.”

He believes the present White House administration is also motivated by a “determined secularism,” while Communist dictator Joseph Stalin would “admire the uniformity of the American press, with some exceptions.”

In 2010 the Illinois legislature voted to legalize same-sex civil unions, a move which led to the closure of Catholic foster care services. This, said the bishop, took the Church “entirely out of the work that we started when the State of Illinois could not have cared less about beggar kids running up and down the streets.”

Bishop Jenky is very conscious of this patrimony of Catholic schools, hospitals and other social services “built by the sacrifice of Catholic believers” in previous generations of Illinois Catholics. “There weren’t a lot of multi-millionaires who built the churches, opened those orphanages or built those schools,” he said.

The bishop fears that socially liberal elites ultimately want to secularize such institutions by stealth. “I assume that is the underlying goal,” he suggested, “so that is robbing Christ but it is also robbing the heritage of generations of believers. So we would try to resist this in every way possible. It would be an incredible injustice.”

In conversation, he quoted the stark 2010 prediction of Cardinal Francis George of Chicago, “I will die in bed, my successor will die in prison and his successor will die a martyr in the public square.” So is Bishop Jenky prepared for prison or worse?

“I hope I would always prefer Christ to anything so, if it came to it, yes but I would be one of the trembling martyrs.”

He recalled how in ancient Rome some Christians would run towards their martyrdom. He, on the other hand, would “probably be walking down the Forum with eyes downcast a little.”

“I think most of the bishops of our Church, though, would be faithful to Christ above anything, including our own personal freedom.”

Just words.

Actions are needed.

Bushops Jenky, Wuerl, others: Excommunicate Pelosi.

Letting her get away with her heresy makes a mockery of the >500,000 young people who Marched for Life in the cold and rain last month in DC.

Once again, excommunicate Pelosi!

We really need more of him! Bishop Jenky's pastoral letter on secularism is here. From the letter:

I am especially scandalized by some “Catholic” politicians who willingly collaborate with efforts to restrict the civil liberty of the faith tradition from which they were originally sprung. Many of those in office who were taught to read and write in Catholic schools, now seem entirely indifferent to the consciences of those Catholics who live their faith. On Ash Wednesday, they like to be conspicuous with crosses on their foreheads, but the true Cross of Christ seems far from their hearts and minds. They enjoy parties on March the 17th and wearing green sweaters but in effect are ashamed of Saint Patrick’s unwavering zeal for the Catholic Christianity. They like photo opportunities with the hierarchy, but break their word to them without a moment’s hesitation. They may still use the rituals of Catholicism to mark their happy and sad occasions, but apparently would sell their soul for a vote or a dollar. What does it benefit a person to gain the whole world but lose their soul (Mark 8:36), but eternal loss for the sake of public office in Illinois is an extraordinarily foolish deal with the devil. Such people certainly need our prayers, but they should no longer be able to take our friendship or our support for granted …

Letter of support from Presbyterian minister

As a Protestant clergyman in Peoria County, I think it is important that Bishop Jenky know he has some support - even outside of the Roman Catholic community.

The particular details of the issue of birth control notwithstanding, the germane point here is that the Obama administration is seeking to force the violation of religious beliefs and convictions onto individual Christians and certain of the institutions that they own.

This type of pompous demagoguery - so typical of this president - is both appalling and dangerous. If Protestants - especially conservative ones - think they are outside of the administration's assault on their own religious freedoms, they are greatly mistaken.

Stay the course, Bishop Jenky. It is not worth caving to the world and to the devil.

Not now. Let’s not give the liberals the equivalent of a martyr at this time. All Catholics know what Pelosi is for and that she is the epitome of the worst of a Pharisee. The Pope has refused to see her as a Catholic, only saw her in her secular position.

They should stop hinting at what is to come for the Pelosi’s of this world and start casting them out of the church as heretics. They seem to be reluctant to take this fight to the next level.

You do realize that Jenky has no jurisdiction over Pelosi? Wuerly (DC) I'm not sure about, but the bishop of San Francisco (Niederauer) surely does.

Poster Beave Meister on another thread reports:

I went to church today [i.e., Sunday] at St. Timothy’s in Los Angeles. When I arrived there were four state police cars out in front of the church. I thought they were expecting protest from one side or the other. Then just before the mass started in walks Nancy Pelosi with her Secret Service agents and sits two pews in front of me. I was thought I was going to need a hard hat in case the roof came down, but thankfully nothing like that happened.

I don't know whether it means anything that Pelosi showed up at Mass in LA rather than SF, but it may be possible that Neiderauer is leaning harder on her -- perhaps ordered his diocese not to give her Communion. I hope that's it!

Why do people have to give an account of their lives to God, when He already knows what they will do or have done, and why they did it?

When you meet Him, ask Him yourself:

"But according to thy hardness and impenitent heart, thou treasurest up to thyself wrath, against the day of wrath, and revelation of the just judgment of God. Who will render to every man according to his works. To them indeed, who according to patience in good work, seek glory and honour and incorruption, eternal life: But to them that are contentious, and who obey not the truth, but give credit to iniquity, wrath and indignation." Romans 2:5-8

"Therefore every one of us shall render account to God for himself." Romans 14:12

"For we must all be manifested before the judgement seat of Christ, that every one may receive the proper things of the body, according as he hath done, whether it be good or evil." 2 Corinthians 5:10

"Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers be transformed as the ministers of justice, whose end shall be according to their works." 2 Corinthians 11:15

"Knowing that you shall receive of the Lord the reward of inheritance. Serve ye the Lord Christ. For he that doth wrong, shall receive for that which he hath done wrongfully: and there is no respect of persons with God." Colossians 3:24-25

"And if you invoke as Father Him who, without respect of persons, judgeth according to every one's work: converse in fear during the time of your sojourning here." 1 Peter 1:17

"And I saw the dead, great and small, standing in the presence of the throne, and the books were opened; and another book was opened, which is the book of life; and the dead were judged by those things which were written in the books, according to their works. And the sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and hell gave up their dead that were in them; and they were judged every one according to their works." Apocalypse 20:12-13

I believe that God is Omniscient and Omnipotent and that during our particular judgments He will let us know if we’ve actually walked the walk not just talked the talk.

I’m going to be completely honest here and say the following:
It has ALWAYS galled me somewhat that Kennedy, Pelosi, Kerry, et al. were allowed to receive communion and remain in “good standing” as Catholics when I personally withdrew myself from receiving communion and considering myself a “practicing Catholic” for the simple reason that I had/have some doubts as to portions of doctrine - not that I LIVE my life in actual disobedience and still have the gall to disrespect the act of communion itself according to the rules of the church in standing there to receive it! (sorry for the “run-on” sentence there).

Anyway, I’m glad the Church is speaking out and warning these politicians - I wish they had done so sooner and/or recognized the threat from our gov’t sooner, but I defer to the Church leaders who after centuries of dealing with different governments and leaders probably have a much better understanding than I of which battles to pick, and when... Besides, politicians such as Pelosi and Sebellius shouldn’t HAVE to be reminded of these things in the first place (it goes to show how far gone they are, frankly).

I understand completely what you are saying and feeling. When I consider the situation of the Church, our country, its culture...I now understand that we are ALL to blame. In general, we relegated God to the back burner, we gave Him only leftover time from our increasingly over-busy lives.
We did this individually, as families, as parishioners...and as a nation.

We now see the consequences.

I am now honestly understanding just how much I neglected to do with the gift of faith that I was given. I should have been praying a long time ago for our pastors, priests, deacons, bishops, etc...etc....I should have been attending to my own personal relationship with God, etc. etc...walking my own path to holiness, etc.

....but I, as I suspect so many others have....allowed my self-interests, my attachment to THINGS...to get in the way. I too had grave doubts about certain teachings of the Church. As a result, I left the Church for several years. They were my choices and I accept the responsibility. Thankfully, God has a way of alerting us to where we are heading. He does this in a way that encourages us to begin to make better choices, and to examine the *why* of our actions and thoughts. Those new choices lead to joy and divine peace. Those choices improve our lives, our families, our parishes, our communities and so on. (Yes, it’s a process that takes a bit of time.)

THIS, however, is one of the most basic ways the Church (remember that WE are the Church) is strengthened and purified.

I heartily recommend this book as a way of beginning to “turn things around” and awaken us to the wonderful adventure of not only following Jesus Christ in a profound way, but to participate in meaningful growth of holiness within the Church:

The Fulfillment of All Desire by Ralph Martin.

May HE bless you abundantly for your honesty and sincerity.

;-)
