Catholic Archbishop George Niederauer of the Archdiocese of San Francisco has written a letter that will be distributed at all Masses this weekend about the Obama administration’s decision to require Catholic institutions to administration would require Catholic institutions such as hospitals and universities to provide contraceptives under the Affordable Care Act. See Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius’ statement here.

The ruling has raised a huge row with many Catholics, who make up 27 percent of the electorate and constitute a large share of independents. They are also concentrated in the battleground states that will decide the presidential election. Catholic hospitals serve an estimated one sixth of the population. The Archdiocese of San Francisco includes San Francisco, San Mateo and Marin counties and includes, according to the Archdiocese, more than 550,000 Catholics.

Niederauer in the letter calls the ruling “an alarming and serious matter that negatively impacts the Church in the United States directly, and that strikes at the fundamental right to religious liberty for all citizens of any faith.”

“For the first time in federal law, the government has determined that religious institutions such as Catholic hospitals, Catholic Charities and Catholic Relief Services are not truly religious employers

Excuse me your Excellency, but are you going to allow Holy Communion to be given to your heretical Representative Pelosi?

Who woke the Archbishop Niederaurer up? Better late than never, since the Obama edict over religious institutions was well publicized for weeks.

Of course, he is responsible for the soul of Nancy Pelosi, so he has other problems on his mind, no doubt.

Good question. I just heard the Archbishop of Kansasa City say that he has asked HHS Sec. Sebelius to refrain from taking communion.

I can’t believe my pastor is in Rome during this. He’s to the right of Rush.

Be nice to see some ex-communicating going on instead of strongly worded positions.

All the other bishops protested this thing en masse. It’s very important. If he’d hesitated they might have blessed him, then tarred and feathered him.

Her ordinary (bishop) has the right to do this. He will have contacted her and talked to her. This determination is made based on her condition as assessed by him. This is not made as a punishment but as a lesson and an inducement to come back into communion with the Church. In ancient style, she should have our prayers but also we should keep our distance and not imitate her in any way. She is in trouble right now. Big trouble.

So’s Cardinal George. I’ll bet he’s had some interesting things to say about this. Cardinal George did have an open letter addressed to the Archdiocese of Chicago that appeared on the Internet yesterday, and copies have since multiplied like the proverbial rabbit. It’s linked below.

There was also an article about it earlier that said he came out swinging. Yup.

Yup. I agree. We need to see some clarification of this whole mess. There are a lot of people that need to be informed of the fact that they are in moral trouble. It’s not a good thing to let people coast along thinking that they’re getting away with things when they’re clearly not. And it’s not a good thing for the rest of the people who are trying to behave to watch. It confuse everybody, even people who aren’t Catholic. I say bring on the excommunications, but invite them back if they meet the usual conditions that are required to come back. Assent, obedience, penance, apology.
