Updated: *167* Bishops (More Than 90% of Dioceses) Have Spoken Out Against Obama/HHS Mandate

In the past I’ve compiled a list of all the bishops speaking out on a particular controversial issue (for instance, over Notre Dame’s invitation to President Obama) — here are the bishops who have spoken out against the Obama/HHS mandate.

[See my ongoing coverage of Obama/HHS's war against religious liberty herehere, here and most recently here. I'm also tweeting more updates @AmericanPapist.]

If I have missed anyone please let me know in the comments! And please double-check that your bishop really is not there before posting.

Items in bold mean the statement was read at all diocesan Masses or included in all parish bulletins on Sunday.

Thank you to AmP reader Matthew for helping me group these bishops by province!

Province of Seattle:

Province of Washington:

Archeparchy of Philadelphia (Eastern Rite)

Metropolita of Pittsburgh (Eastern Rite) + Sui Iuris:

SPECIAL MENTION: “The Assembly of Orthodox Bishops in North America just issued a formal statement of protest against the HHS mandate in which the Assembly, representing all 53 Orthodox bishops in North America, references their complete agreement with the statements of the USCCB.”

THANK YOU to everyone who has helped me build and correct this list.

NOTE: If you would like a statement by an Eastern Rite bishop to be included please send me the link/document or post it in the comments! Thank you. I’m trying to provide documentation for all the bishops listed and Eastern Rite bishops have been harder for me to track down. Thank you for understanding!

UPDATE: Of the 183 dioceses (by my count) in the U.S. who have a bishop currently serving as its head, 167 of them have issued statements. So more than 90% of bishops who head dioceses have spoken out against the Obama/HHS mandate.

Hooray for these Bishops. The list keeps growing.

I'm thinking that these Bishops need to receive messages of encouragement. Your thoughts?

When Jewish, Protestant, Muslim and other Christians stand with the Catholic Church — something dramatic is taking place, no?

I don’t know why they are speaking out now.

Just because it’s now on their doorstep?

Couldn’t they think even a day or two ahead?

Why didn’t they speak out when the Stupak ‘fake out the pro-life churches’ move was introduced to the House for a vote? Back when this could have been stopped cold in it’s tracks?

Where were they when this “known” pro-abortion President was a “known” pro-abortion candidate? And, why hasn’t Nancy Pelosi been ex-communicated?

I can’t speak for the Bishops, so I can’t answer your question.

In my opinion this one issue is uniting all Christians against Obama. Makes me ask — did God plan this?

Also with Jewish and Muslim leaders speaking out with the Christians, makes a person wonder!

Bishop Supich of the Diocese of Spokane (Seattle Province, I believe) is conspicuous by his absence from the list, and by the total silence from the pulpit here. Like it never happened. 2+ weeks of crickets chirping.

I thought he would be a most-welcome breath of fresh air after his predecessor. And our pastor is a retired USAF chaplain!

Yet, they have the temerity to push for more donations to the Annual Catholic Appeal...my encouragement will consist of engaging their wallet.

What does that mean -- disputed?

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy defines the marketing division of the Sirius Cybernetics Corporation as "a bunch of mindless jerks who'll be the first against the wall when the revolution comes".... Curiously enough, an edition of the Encyclopedia Galactica that had the good fortune to fall through a time warp from a thousand years in the future defined the marketing division of the Sirius Cybernetics Corporation as "a bunch of mindless jerks who were the first against the wall when the revolution came."

Unfortunately, Socialism seems natural to people of the cloth. Now about breaking that deal with Satan — it ain’t gonna be that easy. Good news, however, that they’re trying.

It is a matter of dispute as to whether his public statements amount to a definitive condemnation of Obama’s crime against our Constitution.

Yet these bishops were fine with the Democrat Party over other issues like illegal immigration and "helping the poor". They neglected to realize that the Dem Party is a package deal.

After generations of priests teaching priests, they have a culture and storyline totally out of touch with economic common sense.

They also feel that that they have to “balance” social conservativism with liberal economics.

Bad theology is also involved. Many Catholic clergy parrot “Am I my brother’s keeper” which is the theology of the first murderer; not of Judeo-Christian values.

Hooray for these Bishops.

And yet Roman Catholics overwhelmingly voted for him. Where were these Bishops during the last election?
