Tebow’s Religion, and Ours
National Review Online ^ | December 3, 2011 | Daniel Foster

Posted on 12/05/2011 3:32:27 PM PST by wmfights

When the Detroit Lions’ Stephen Tulloch sacked Tim Tebow in the first quarter of their week eight matchup, the linebacker immediately kneeled next to the prone Denver quarterback, in a mockery of Tebow’s habit of praying on-field, most recently seen after his miraculous fourth-quarter comeback against the Dolphins the week before.

The insult coincided with and reinforced the explosion of “Tebowing” as an Internet meme, complete with a Twitter account and web-site. There you can see an act of communion with one’s creator rendered as a bit of pop-cultural ephemera, and you can scroll through pictures of folks striking the pose everywhere from Oxford to Istanbul, with that muddle of irony and enthusiasm that has become my generation’s trademark.

But there isn’t an ironic bone in Tim Tebow’s body. That’s what makes him conspicuous. That’s what makes the fact that he’s managed to stay squeaky clean, in a sport that notoriously is not, conspicuous. And it’s why the power of Tebow’s evangelical-Christian faith, and the earnestness with which he professes it, seems to annoy so many people.

As a culture we just can't believe we are sinners. And of course Shuller, Osteen and others just feed into what the culture wants to believe.

You are so right!

What they don’t get is that it’s not about *religion*. Tebow has a vibrant, real relationship with his Lord and Savior and the world simply does not know what to do with it.

What a great perspective.

We better pray for this role model. There are probably all types out there right now figuring out a way to take him down....morally.

Amen Brother.

I'm sure he will make mistakes. We all do. I'm also praying that we as Christians show at least half his enthusiasm for the Lord in lifting him back up after he does make a mistake. We let Christian role models be manipulated into a situation where if they aren't perfect the non believers can point fingers and say "see he's a hypocrite". We have to come right back and tell these people "No, he's a sinner who's been forgiven."

Randall Terry is an effervescent, and unpredictible man, an obsessive-compulsive who has led a very tumultuous life. From my conversations with him, I find that he has very little understanding of the Bible, especially for someone who went to a Bible college.

His divorce from Cindy was a low point in his life, and it was largely due to their legal troubles incurred by doing battle with the child murder industry.

Anyone turned off by his non stop love for giving all credit to Jesus Christ?

Not I. But, and I mean this in the best sort of way, faith is measured through adversity and persecution.

Jas 1:2-3 Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness.

Jeers are far easier to deal when you're winning than when losing. People (including Christians) are shallow and love to be around winners. When times got tough for our Lord, everyone deserted Him. And then when things go bad we question ourselves, our faith, and why God is not with us.

May God protect and bless this young man's heart.

Salvation- Why do you bother with his lacking knowledge or awareness. He gives gut reactions to nonsense. Nobody saying there are Christians who do not Do what they are supposed to do.

They read the paper which includes "Catholic" who never go to Church. So thats the percentage game the media plays with Evangelics or Catholic. Then the small knuckleheads who go to all churches who disregard too.

But one thing I know since 1973 to today in the mass/service has been prayers for the unborn ever since which are always declared. Every Catholic Church I have gone to has declared prayers. Prolife prayers are prayered constantly at church. You cannot ignore them. So a real Church-goer hears them.

Perhaps not on this thread, but on others, they most certainly do. Or at least the Catholics do about non-Catholics.

Present company excluded. You don't take anyone's silence about their works as evidence of their non-existence.

Hi Metmom- Remember the old saying "do not talk religion or politics". And here we are on a Political and Religion site doing this exactly. LOL!

Freeper Regards!
