Amazing. He can really paint. So much of his stuff is doctrinaire Soviet-Realism, but even when painting Lenin he can’t help but be good. There’s a Deco air to a lot of his work too.

"1937" refers to the year of most intense Stalinist repressions, which in that particular year touched the man with power, careers in the Soviet system, often party members -- the social class that considered itself victorious and safe. The man being arrested is the artist's father. The document displayed in the inset is the "rehabilitation" notice, obtained after Stalin's death, when some of the convictions were overturned, often posthumously.
