At Orlando church, 'Passion' star Jim Caviezel talks about Mel Gibson's troubles -- and his own

Actor Jim Caviezel, his voice sometimes cracking with emotion, spoke of being "rejected in my own industry," the problems of his friend Mel Gibson and his son's cancer in an appearance Saturday night at First Baptist Church of Orlando.

The star of "The Passion of the Christ," whom First Baptist pastor David Uth described as "more passionate about God" than anyone he's ever met, was in town to give witness to his faith, to urge others to share it and to sell a new all-star audio production of the Bible that he has produced.

During a 20-minute talk, Caviezel spoke of the troubles that have dogged Gibson, his "Passion" director, who has been labeled an anti-Semite in addition to being caught on tape ranting and cursing out the mother of his youngest child.

I am a movie buff. Have seen all the great ones. And Frequency (and Passion of the Christ) should be considered some of the all time greats. My criteria is pretty simple. The movie must make you feel (really feel) some thing, not be a waste of your time and not be predictable (the Passion wasn't BTW). Both of those movies do just that.

I watched The Passion during Lent and then on Easter. It was invigorating to say the least. I was baptised and confirmed just this Easter. I find that looking to people who have a strong faith, talk and walk it like a true Catholic will always inspire and motivate me. Jim Caviezel and his wife are living their lives like true Catholics and I am thankful for the example that they set. It is truly moving.

The first scene with Caviezel and Penn is terrific. Reminds me a little bit of the diner scene w/ Pacino and DeNiro in Heat.

There are some black clergy who walk the walk, and there are some that don’t.

Just like white clergy, sadly.

Perhaps, but I wouldn't know from any personal experience. It seems to me that libs go to town making fun of "Bible-thumping rednecks" and no Black minister ever sticks up for his so-called co-religionists.

He must not be a Feeneyite.

What's a Feeneyite?

As a right wing Catholic, I've always enjoyed discussions with Baptists.

How can you be a right wing Catholic and not have heard of Father Feeney?

At any rate, the Feeneyites teach that actual membership in the Catholic Church (not "mystical" membership) is absolutely essential to be saved. They also deny baptism of desire and baptism of blood.

IMDB shows 11 film rolls since the Jesus movie. That's 1.5 per year. He's hardly being rejected.

Why is a right wing Catholic speaking at a Baptist Church?

Rent's due.

Could Mel's movie have been better cast? I don't think so. Outstanding indeed!

To convert Baptists?

Doubtful, considering the notoriously non-evangelical nature of American Catholicism.
