So What Shall We Do during These Forty Days of Lent? [Catholic/Orthodox Caucus]

The traditional purpose of Lent is the preparation of the believer for the celebration of the Resurrection and to strengthen ourselves in our beliefs for dealing with a hostile world. We accomplish that through prayer and penitence, almsgiving and self-denial/fasting.

In light of this purpose of Lent, SOME Catholic and Orthodox posters will absent themselves from FreeRepublic completely during Lent's forty days.

(They will just silently disappear!)

Great Lent for Orthodox begins on March 7th.  Lent for Catholics begins on March 9th

The Lord's instructions for Lent from the Gospel of Matthew 6:1-18 (RSV)

Matthew 6
1 "Beware of practicing your piety before men in order to be seen by them; for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.
2 "Thus, when you give alms, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by men. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.
3 But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,
4 so that your alms may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
5 "And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by men. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.
6 But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
7 "And in praying do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do; for they think that they will be heard for their many words.
8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.
9 Pray then like this: Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
10 Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, On earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us this day our daily bread;
12 And forgive us our debts, As we also have forgiven our debtors;
13 And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil.
14 For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father also will forgive you;
15 but if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
16 "And when you fast, do not look dismal, like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by men. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.
17 But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face,
18 that your fasting may not be seen by men but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

Silence is not a weakness, but a strength.

There are battles, and there are wars. Christ lost the battle on Good Friday, but won the war for us on Easter Sunday.

Remember the silence of our Lord in the face of his accusers. Recall that those who welcomed Jesus to Jerusalem, waving palms and olive branches, were shouting “crucify him” only five days later. It is not easy to apply Christ’s command to: “Love your enemies. Do good to those who persecute you”.

RSV

Matthew 4
1 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.
2 And he fasted forty days and forty nights, and afterward he was hungry.
3 And the tempter came and said to him, "If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread."
4 But he answered, "It is written, `Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.'"
5 Then the devil took him to the holy city, and set him on the pinnacle of the temple,
6 and said to him, "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down; for it is written, `He will give his angels charge of you,' and `On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.'"
7 Jesus said to him, "Again it is written, `You shall not tempt the Lord your God.'"
8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and the glory of them;
9 and he said to him, "All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me."
10 Then Jesus said to him, "Begone, Satan! for it is written, `You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.'"
11 Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and ministered to him.

Orthodox Great Lent ping. As you all know, tomorrow is the Sunday of the Last Judgment and after sundown, Cheesefare Week, the beginning of the fast from meat.

“Let us go before, O brethren, and cleanse ourselves for the Queen of virtues; for behold she hath come bringing to us fortune of good deeds, quenching the uprisings of passion and reconciling the wicked to the Master. Let us welcome her, therefore, shouting to Christ God, O thou who arose from the dead, keep us uncondemned, who glorify Thee, O Thou who alone art sinless.” Doxastikon of Matins, First Tone

No less a painter than Pablo Picasso once said there was no greater subject in art than the crucifixion.

Salvador Dali painted Christ on the cross several times.
This is an unusual version. Appears to fuse the Crucifixion with the Resurrection.

I’ve never seen that one before.

Another one is looking vertically down at Christ’s head on the cross.

From the NAB:

Jesus said to his disciples:
“Take care not to perform righteous deeds
in order that people may see them;
otherwise, you will have no recompense from your heavenly Father.
When you give alms,
do not blow a trumpet before you,
as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets
to win the praise of others.
Amen, I say to you,
they have received their reward.
But when you give alms,
do not let your left hand know what your right is doing,
so that your almsgiving may be secret.
And your Father who sees in secret will repay you.

“When you pray,
do not be like the hypocrites,
who love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on street corners
so that others may see them.
Amen, I say to you,
they have received their reward.
But when you pray, go to your inner room,
close the door, and pray to your Father in secret.
And your Father who sees in secret will repay you.

“When you fast,
do not look gloomy like the hypocrites.
They neglect their appearance,
so that they may appear to others to be fasting.
Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward.
But when you fast,
anoint your head and wash your face,
so that you may not appear to be fasting,
except to your Father who is hidden.
And your Father who sees what is hidden will repay you.”

A very interesting painting. It seems to me that the cross is now an altar table of sacrifice. Quite thought provoking. I also like the rock. The rock of Peter upon which Christ’s Church is built, in my opinion.

Last year, the Lord nudged me to make a list of the people I hated and was holding grudges against. Then, to narrow it down to 5, and to pray for them daily, for my Lenten fast. It was a lovely Lent — one of the women, I found out about a week after I started, had been struggling with breast cancer. Another came up to me during that year;I mentioned that I had been praying for her. What do you know? She had been fighting a battle herself to watch her rude words, and was so touched that I had been praying.

It was a powerful fast.

I received our Parish Lenten package in today’s mail. Our pastor starts the letter:

Dear Lenten Sojourner,

Lent invites us to journey. During its forty days Lent calls us to stay in another place. It calls us to a place of prayer, penance and almsgiving. We come to this place for a time in order to prepare ourselves spiritually for Easter.

He then suggests a number of way to allow the grace of Lent to grow in our mind and heart.

One way is a “Little Black Book” that we have been using for several years. The book asks you to give 6 minutes a day. The right hand page takes you through the Passion according to Matthew. The left hand page offers thoughts and quotes. I have found this book to be very helpful in preparing for Lent.

The book is offered by the diocese of Saginaw and more information can be found at www.littlebooks.org

I have seen that book and actually posted from it many years ago.

This year I am looking forward to receiving our Magnificate reflection book. Should be superb!

Exactly why I decided to post it today rather than waiting until next week as I had previously thought about.

Let us ask our Lord to work in us and through us, and let us do our utmost to draw Him down into our hearts, for He Himself has said: “Without Me you can do nothing.”
