Military Uses Force Against Egypt’s Coptic Monasteries

Egyptian soldiers attacked for the second time the Monastery of Saint Bishoy Alexandria in Wady el-Rayan, Fayoum, 110 km from Cairo. Two monks and six Coptic labourers were wounded. Four people were arrested, three monks and a Coptic lawyer who was visiting the monastery to investigate a similar incident the day before.

Monk Aksios Ava Bishoy told Nader Shoukry, of Free Copts, that the army stormed the monastery using five tanks, armoured vehicles and a bulldozer to demolish the fence built by the monastery last month to protect the building and its residents from the lawlessness that has prevailed in Egypt since the 25 January uprising. In fact, the monastery since that day has been attacked by common criminals who escaped from prisons.

“We contacted state security and they said there was no police available for protection,” Fr Bemwa said. “We were put in touch with the military personnel who told us to protect ourselves until they reach us.”

In order to protect themselves, the monks built a low fence on the borders of the one side of the monastery that is vulnerable to attacks, on land that belongs to the monastery. Both monks and monastery labourers have kept watch over it 24 hours a day.

Last Monday, the army issued an ultimatum to the monastery, demanding the wall be torn down within 48 hours; otherwise, it would act. The monastery did not heed the order.

After the attack, the military issued a statement on their Facebook page denying that it had attacked the monastery. Instead, it claimed that soldiers simply tore down a fence built on state land.

According to monastery officials, the fence was built on land that belongs to the monastery. For this reason, monks from Saint Bishoy have organised a sit-in in front of the convent to protest against the use of arms by the military.

The army also attacked the Monastery of St Makarios of Alexandria in Wady el-Rayan, Fayoum, 100 km from Cairo, for the same reason. One monk was shot and more than ten were beaten.

About 7,000 Copts staged a peaceful rally in front of the Coptic Cathedral in Cairo. From there, they marched towards Tahrir Square to protest against attacks by the military on Coptic monasteries.

>> [All but Sola Scriptura Caucus] <<

Ummm... what the heck does the Egyptian military attacking a Coptic monastery have to do with prohibiting "sola scriptura" followers from posting here? As a Catholic, I don't get it. You might as well have put [All but I Love Cheesecake Caucus] Don't let any fans of cheesecake unto this thread!!!

I think trying to pin down a caucus definition may have been the intent.

I am praying for the Copts and all Christians who face persecution under Islam.

P.S. Why not put this as a Catholic/Orthodox Caucus and see what happens?

Pretty self-explainatory, isn't it? Sola Scriputura caucus is for Christians who believe scripture is the sole authority. Again, has nothing to do with Egyptians attacking a monastery, I'm pretty sure all Christians would be against innocent monks being attacked.

What I wonder is why the heck there is both a "Sola Scriputra caucus" and a "Protestant caucus". Given that the "sola scriputura" doctrine is only found in protestantism, isn't it redundant to have two caucuses? They will obviously have the same posters. Makes as much sense as having a "Catholic caucus" and then make a separate "Roman Papacy" caucus.

"Sola Scriputura caucus is for Christians who believe scripture is the sole authority."

That definition is at odds with the majority of the Protestant world. The vast majority of Protestants claim it means that Scripture contains all that is necessary. Big difference.

Well they can debate it amongst themselves what Martin Luther meant by “sola scriptura” in the Protestant Caucus, can’t they? Since I don’t believe in that doctrine, I don’t really care how its defined.

“the army stormed the monastery using five tanks”

Is the army afraid of the monks in the monastery? Do they think the monks will stick flowers in their rifles? Are they afraid they’ll catch a glimpse of a cross?

An act of savage barbarianism committed by hate filled cowards.

These two exceprts from this thread prove that Coptic means Catholic.

THE RITES OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH -- There are many!

3.ALEXANDRIAN Coptic Coptic Patriarch of Alexandria of the Copts Egypt

ALEXANDRIAN. The liturgy used by the church in Alexandria in Egypt is attributed to St. Mark the evangelist. This church became known as the Coptic church because Copt is the Arabic and Greek word for Egyptian. Before the Moslem invasion in 641 the Copts fell into heresy due to their rejection of the Council of Chalcedon (451). Through missionary work, some of these were brought back into union in recent years. Today there exists in Egypt the Coptic rite which is Orthodox and the Coptic rite that is loyal to the Bishop of Rome.

Thus the sola scriptura thread about the Coptic Church should not be a valid caucus for the subject -- there are too many Catholics in Egypt.......alllllllthe things you never knew or never wanted to know! LOL!

It can remain an open thread or a Catholic Caucus thread. I don’t know what the caucus was before.

The thread you questioned by Freepmail was titled "JAILED AFGHAN CONVERT: Obama urged to help free Said Musa [Sola Scriptura Caucus]" - the above information applies to Egypt not Afghanistan.

Also, the thread has been pulled.

I see you are speaking of the attempt to caucus this article.

Because it is obvious that a "flame war by article" is going on, we are pulling frivolous caucus tags and threads.

Being news related, this article will not be caucused.

I doubt the Islamofascists are going to ask Christians their views on the Council of Chalcedon, the Filioque, or Sola Scriptura vs Scripture and tradition. They will just behead the infidels. All of them.

Read the history of the Crusades and notice how effectively the Mohammedans exploited the fault lines in Christianity.

well written and a shocking failure of us Christians as a whole. When we are disunited we fall.

We face two common enemies -- Islam and secularism/liberalism.

We must fight these together. Yes, we have a lot of serious disputes between ones -- some fundamental, others not so much, but we can be united on common issues and more importantly, we MUST be united on the common THREATS.

When we fight the war on Islam, the Catholics should not turn on the Calvinists, nor vice-versa.

After the war is over we can debate (key word "debate") and if we disagree, agree to disagree.

History teaches us that after Rome raises an army to fight an enemy she turns on those she considers heretics . Unity with Rome is a curse on Protestants . There would not be so many muslims if there was never created a vacuum for them to grow in the first place by killing all those you considered heretics.
