Yes, it is one of the many staggering highlights in the Basilica, a place that can never grow dull even after repeated visits. I highly recommend the Scavi tour, which explores the level below the ‘basement’ of the Basilica. It was excavated in the 1950’s at the direction of Pious XII. You are taken back 2,000 years to the beginning, and at one point you stand within about 10 feet of the grave of St. Peter.

Only 12 people take each guided tour, a very intimate look at the roots of Catholicism, and paganism. It’s not an easy ticket, but well worth requesting. There is a fabulous visual tour at the Vatican site, search Scavi tour.
