Vatican City, Feb 18, 2011 / 04:29 pm (CNA/EWTN News).- The Vatican has released new details about the upcoming beatification of Pope John Paul II.

The celebrations will run from April 30-May 2, with the beatification itself taking place on May 1. For most events, the Vatican said, no tickets will be required and all will be welcomed.

The festivities will begin with a prayer vigil in the massive open field of the Circus Maximus - where ancient Romans once held chariot races -- on the evening of April 30. The vigil will be led by the diocese's vicar general, Cardinal Agostino Vallini. Pope Benedict will also join the gathering by way of a video link.

The beatification will begin on Sunday, May 1 in St. Peter's Square. The Vatican said police will regulate access to the square, but that there will be no tickets required for the event.

Immediately following the beatification ceremony, the remains of Pope John Paul II will be in front of the Altar of the Confession in St. Peter's Basilica for veneration.

The Basilica will be open to pilgrims for “as long as the faithful continue to arrive,” according to the Vatican announcement.

The following day, Vatican secretary of state Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone will preside over a Mass of thanksgiving again in St. Peter's Square.

After the celebrations, the remains of John Paul II will privately be interred in the Vatican basilica's Chapel of St. Sebastian.

The body of future Blessed Pope John Paul II will be placed in the chapel of St. Sebastian between the Pieta and the Chapel of the Eucharist. The chapel features an altarpiece executed by Pier Paolo Cristofari from a painting by by Domenichino Zampieri. It previously held the mortal remains of Blessed Innocent XI (1676-1689).

If I owned a high-end tourist business, I’d be booking Royal Wedding - JPII combo tours. Is there anything else going on across the pond in April?

LOL! If I were able to travel, I would take the trip to see both.

That will be amazing. I’ll have to catch the streaming video of some of it.

When I get out of the Coast Guard we’ll go to Rome. Along with one of the byos, whichever is best at speaking Italian at the time so I don’t have to learn.

OldTax-lady said she would take us when she turns 75, in 2013, if any of us is still mobile. You could come to push her wheelchair, and Pat will be speaking Latin by then. (Like unto being that would help ...)

Uncle Russ can mangle a little Italian, since he lived there several years, and so can Cousin Tony. And they know where to go for wine.

Oh. I won’t be out by then. But maybe I’ll have a new command that looks more kindly on foreign travel than this one does. We had a guy who wanted to go to Australia..had to do all these briefings on collecting intelligence and stuff. Sketchy.
I’d have to practice looking non-military. Otherwise the combination of me, Uncle Russ, and Cousin Tony will make people think we’re spies or something.

Yeah, three armed services represented, plus Pat. Very insecure.

Did I tell you about Pat’s intelligence-gathering in the locker room in Monroe? “Pat won’t come out!!!” says James, in deep dudgeon. “He’s listening to people’s conversations and told me to go away!”

If I get to go in 2013, I’ll scout the place so we can have a seriously good time when you’re out of the service.

By my calculations, I’ll be a few months out of a-school by then. If I continue my current habits of having 25+ days of leave on the books, I can take leave and hope my new station doesn’t care that I’m dissapearing to Rome for three weeks.
Or I can just get stationed overseas, like I want to.

Who knows what will happen by 2013. Maybe we won’t even have a Coast Guard ... it’s not like the Zero administration wants to guard our coasts or anything. You’ll have four years in, other things equal, in September 2013, right?

Golly, tempus fugit. I have no memories of half of 2009 and a good part of 2010.

I have to extend I think three years when I make E-4. To make up, supposedly, for all the time spent as a non-rate, even though I’m currently doing a BM3 job on the ship anyway.
I only remember the parts where we were underway. Most of it isn’t worth remembering anyhow.

Well, pfui. You can try for a shore post, eventually, and get a bunch of college done.

I could, but there’s no future with it in my rate. Shore posts for GMs are basically a dead end, because we can’t be LE personnel at a station and we aren’t boat crew members. I could get an armory, but they only send people with no previous underway experience to those, and I’m already out of the running for that. Plus I’m pretty sure they’re getting rid of those.
On a ship, though, GMs are in charge of law enforcement plus all of the ship’s weapons systems. And I’m already familiar with two of those, so the chances of me being sent to a shore billet are pretty slim. Unless I get pregnant or seriously injured.

Erm. One eventuality is under your control, while the other has a certain level of randomness. And you've shown yourself to be on the upside of randomness, as a rule, although that can't last forever.

Oh, well. If God means you to go to Rome, you'll get there at the right time. I can take Tom to push OldTax-lady's wheelchair - he needs the exercise, so I hope it's all uphill. Pat probably can't go, no matter how much Latin he speaks, because she thinks he's bats.

Well, Rome was built on seven hills. So I assume it would be uphill at least half of the time.
If I don’t get shot, attacked by detainees, fall off the small boat, etc, we’ll see. Or I might get lucky and end up at some MSST. Although I hear they’re getting rid of those, as well. Budget problems. So, I suppose, I can blame the fact that I’m not advancing on Obama.
