The Scriptures Teach and Testify of Jesus Christ

"The Scriptures Teach and Testify of Jesus Christ", Ensign, Jan. 2011, 14–15

The scriptures contain counsel from prophets, inspired accounts of God’s dealings with people, and revelations from God to His prophets. Scriptures teach that we are children of our Heavenly Father, who loves us. As part of His plan for our eternal happiness, we have come to earth. While we are here, the scriptures are a spiritual lifeline to our Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ.

The main purpose of the scriptures is to testify of Christ, helping us come unto Him and receive eternal life (see John 5:39). Thus Latter-day prophets counsel us to study the scriptures every day, both individually and with our families. President Thomas S. Monson said: “Participate in daily scripture study. Crash courses are not nearly so effective as the day-to-day reading and application of the scriptures in our lives. Become acquainted with the lessons the scriptures teach. … Study them as though they were speaking to you, for such is the truth.”1

Through the words of the scriptures, we can come to know and love our Heavenly Father and the Savior Jesus Christ. We can read Their commandments and, as a result, learn to see the difference between right and wrong. We gain strength to resist the temptation to sin. We increase our desire to obey God’s laws. The scriptures comfort us and teach us while we are on earth, and they show us the way back to our heavenly home.

Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints accept the following as scripture:

  1. The Bible is a collection of sacred writings containing God’s revelations to ancient prophets in the Holy Land. Our eighth article of faith states, “We believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly.”

  2. The Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ contains God’s revelations to ancient prophets in the Americas. It contains the fulness of the gospel of Jesus Christ (see D&C 20:9).

  3. The Doctrine and Covenants is a book of revelations regarding the Restoration of the gospel of Jesus Christ, given to modern prophets beginning with Joseph Smith.

  4. The Pearl of Great Price contains additional revelations from God to Moses, Abraham, and Joseph Smith.

  5. God continues to reveal truths to living prophets through the inspiration of the Holy Ghost. These truths are considered scripture (see D&C 68:4). They come to us primarily through general conference, held the first weekend in April and October, when members throughout the world hear addresses from our prophet and other Church leaders.

For more information, see Gospel Principles (2009), 45–49; and True to the Faith (2004), 155–59.

“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16).

“The central purpose of all scripture is to fill our souls with faith in God the Father and in His Son, Jesus Christ. …

“… Faith comes by the witness of the Holy Spirit to our souls, Spirit to spirit, as we hear or read the word of God. And faith matures as we continue to feast upon the word. …

“… Study the scriptures carefully, deliberately. Ponder and pray over them. Scriptures are revelation, and they will bring added revelation.”

Elder D. Todd Christofferson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, “The Blessing of Scripture,” Liahona and Ensign, May 2010, 34, 35.

Do you recommend the 1830 version of the BOM or the 1962 version, after the changes?

Do you recommend the original 1835 Book of Commandments or today’s version of the Doctrine & Covenants, after the original Section 101 was taken out and Section 132 put in?

Could you provide the original Greek word which was translated into the English word ‘Telestial’, and provide the Webster’s definition for the word?

I get so sick of you mindless cultists and your incessant garbage. Joseph Smith was a con man and a liar. The book of mormon was nothing but a poorly written novel stolen from Solomon Spaulding.

BTW, the b of m is about on par with a Dan Brown novel, but not as well written: both are heretical bilge but have lots of duped people who adore the message.

Too bad FLDS/LDS "Prophets" Joseph Smith and Brigham Young taught that Christ was sinning polygamist who was not born of a Virgin, and even your recent "Prophet" Hinkley stated that you do not believe in the traditional Christ of the bible.

"The book of mormon was nothing but a poorly written novel stolen from Solomon Spaulding"

And the entire "Plan of Salvation" they have their missionaries sell was ripped off from Emmanuel Swedenborg'g 1775 book, "A Treatise on Heaven and Hell".

Which Jesus? The Mormon version, or the Biblical Version? The spiritual offspring, created being Jesus, or the eternal Alpha and Omega Jesus that God’s Word describes?

What happens when the Bible says something that contradicts something else written in one of the other “scriptures”? Is there some order of authority?

NO NO NO

In the New Testament, a virgin chosen by God the Father to be the mother of His Son in the flesh. After Jesus’ birth, Mary had other children (Mark 6:3). Hinkley not saying that he did not believe in the Biblical Christ.

Hinckley continued (with words usually omitted by critics):

"Am I Christian? Of course I am. I believe in Christ. I talk of Christ. I pray through Christ. I'm trying to follow Him and live His gospel in my life. "

The unaltered quote

"No I don't. The traditional Christ of whom they speak is not the Christ of whom I speak. For the Christ of whom I speak has been revealed in this the dispensation of the fullness of times."

I just read Ellen G white of the seventh day adventists where she claimed that Jesus was the ARchangel Michael. And here the Mormons come up with some other definition. Strange, 1800 years after Christ both Ellen and Joe “realised the truth” but two different truths.... ;-P

Most mormons i’ve met are very nice people. They are not Christians though and I get tired of hearing a single one claim that. You can’t buy into that flim-flam man’s book and be a real Christian.

They are one and the same. If you are being told otherwise you are being misled.

Show me.

Bear in mind, calling the anti-Mormon cult that dwells on FR out as a cult is not the same thing.

You need to do a little better job in your research my friend. You obviously are reading straight out of an anti-Mormon propagandist source. You do want the truth right?

Talking of 'a' christ is typical spin by Mormons. That doesn't mean these 'talkers' are faithing in the Jesus Christ of the Bible, Who was with God and WAS GOD in the beginning. If you read your Bible, in Acts you will find a scene where a girl with a demonic spirit of divination followed Paul Around proclaiming loudly that 'these men' bring the message from God of how we must be saved, but she was speaking by inspiration of demons, just like your founding conman, Joseph Smith.

We may feel confident in this assertion that Smith spoke and wrote under the influence of demonic spirits because he taught things which blaspheme God and Christ, and established a 'Melchizedek' priesthood which is a stark blasphemy against Whom the Bible teaches Jesus is as our ONLY great High Priest in the order of Melchizedek, our Priest forever in The Holy of Holies.

If you're a male Mormon, BM, I would bet these cult of Mormonism has conferred upon your this same blasphemous title. Come out of this demonically inspired religion which blasphemes God and Jesus Christ.

It is a lie from the demons of hell to claim that the Mormonic jesus and the Jesus Christ of the Bible are the same. Here's a contrast for those who are too lazy to check out the data and expose the lie:

The Mormon jesus was sired in heaven through the union of an appointed god and his goddess wife and has satan as his spirit btrother.

The Jesus Christ of the Bible IS God, as proclaimed in John chapter one at the beginning, and all things which were made were made by Him. The Jesus of the Bible did not have to gain the attributes of Godhood, He IS I AM since before there was anything made, before time, before space, before any spirits there IS I AM, and Jesus The Christ is I AM made fleshWho dwelt among us.

It is a demonic lie to claim the Jesus of the Bible is the same jesus taught in Mormonism. The god of Mormonism had to gain the attributes of godhood and be appointed as god over the eaerth by a council of gods ... polytheism is not the God of the Bible, therefore Jesus as God cannot be the same as the jesus of Mormonism. To claim the same is a demonically inspired lie and blasphemy toward The God Who created all.
