Catholic Word of the Day: REORDINATION, 12-27-10
Catholic Reference.net ^ | 12-27-10 | Fr. John Hardon's Modern Catholic Dictionary

Featured Term (selected at random):

REORDINATION

The repetiton of an ordination ceremony for a bishop, priest, or deacon because there are serious grounds for doubting the validity of a previous ordination. The term is inaccurate, since sacred orders, once conferred, cannot be repeated.

I have never heard of this before. Anyone else?

Is this sort of like being baptized in some church (invalid baptism) and being re-baptized in the Catholic Church?

I have never heard of this before. Anyone else? Is this sort of like being baptized in some church (invalid baptism) and being re-baptized in the Catholic Church?

Yes, it can be kind of like that, but other conditions may require redoing a sacrament as well. (For instance, if a bishop confers the sacrament of orders secretly with no witnesses or if a sacramental minister's changes the matter, intent, or form of a sacrament in such a way to draw its validity into question.

As you know, the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Orders leave an indelible character upon the soul of the recipient. Consequently, each of these may only be received once. (In the case of Holy Orders, one can only be ordained to each specific office within Holy Orders once). It is a sin and sacrilege to knowingly repeat one of these sacraments if it has already been validly received.

As mentioned above, sometimes people can receive these sacraments under odd conditions where the validity of the sacrament is questionable. Consequently, there are certain situations where baptisms, confirmations, or ordinations can be repeated to guarantee that they were validly conferred. However, when these sacraments are repeated they are conferred only conditionally. In other words the one conferring the sacrament will say something like: If you are not baptized then I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the son, and of the Holy Spirit. Likewise for ordination. This method of conferring sacraments conditionally prevents duplication unrepeatable sacraments and guarantees that one has validly received the sacraments.
