Well, may I humbly disagree. I was with a group 40 years ago that began to study the church fathers, and over time they quit studying the scripture. In more time, they became Orthodox - not Greek or Russian, but Syrian. Icons & the whole bit.

When we thoroughly know the scriptures cover to cover, are intimate with them, THEN we can study the church fathers and not get off track.

Problem is, how many really know the scriptures? Without this foundational knowledge, we can study the church fathers and get off.........

“Been there, done that, bought the tee shirt......”

Of course, this is just my humble opinion.......

"In more time, they became Orthodox - not Greek or Russian, but Syrian. Icons & the whole bit." And the problem with the Antiochians and Icons is exactly what, A? BTW, A, becoming Orthodox or Roman Catholic is a regular result of reading the Fathers, at least for the heterodox.
