Places for the education of children, in pre-Reformation times, attached to endowed chantries. In England most of the schools operated by the government after secession from Rome had been former chantry schools.

Makes sense. If you pull up the definition of “Chantry,” you’ll see that the “chantry priest” was paid by a deceased person’s estate to offer Masses for the soul of the donor. Once the priest had done that, he had time on his hands, so he might as well open a school, just to keep busy (and earn more money, of course ;-).

“Chantry priests” were also a feature in ancient Egypt, which might freak some people out.

Think about making chant or try into that word in scrabble. People would think you were nuts. LOL! But they don’t know the word and we do. Hooray!
