Rick Warren to Speak at Calvinist Event Despite Some Opposition
Christian Post ^ | 10/8/10 | Michelle A. Vu|

Rick Warren will speak at the Desiring God national conference – connected to Pastor John Piper – Friday amid some criticism of his theology.

Some supporters of the Desiring God ministry had complained that Warren relies more on pragmatism than biblical doctrine – in other words, that he relies more on methods than on God to achieve results.

But Piper defended his decision to invite Warren to the annual conference. In a video, Piper listed Warren’s shared beliefs, including that the Bible is totally inerrant, God is sovereign over everything and that people who do not believe in Jesus Christ as their savior will go to hell.

Warren also memorizes scripture every week, plants a church every year, rejects the prosperity gospel, and believes the only way to change the world is to change people’s hearts through Jesus.

“I’m going to need help to know why you feel bad about this decision,” said Piper in a video addressing people’s concerns about his invitation to Warren.

He stated that Warren is on the same page with the central tenets of the faith.

“I’m not going to push somebody like that away when he has so much to offer,” stated Piper.

Piper also complimented Warren for how he leads Saddleback Church in Southern California.

“I think here he just puts me to shame with his aggressively, in-your-life, transformative discipling of his church,” Piper said.

“They have membership covenants and it’s really rigorous,” he noted, pointing out that there is no such thing as an inactive membership at Saddleback Church.

The Minnesota pastor is still on his eight-month leave of absence and this conference is one of the few speaking engagements he has scheduled. In May, he took his first leave of absence from ministry and his church, Bethlehem Baptist Church in Minneapolis, to examine his soul and focus on his family. He said his break was prompted by “ongoing character flaws” – including pride – and the stresses they have caused to others.

But wait a second. It says right here on page 2,045,281 of the Book of Life that Rick Warren will attend this forum.

After all, it was predestined.

Old news. Did speak. It's out there now, and it's awful. Gospelless platitudes. He actually comes out and says the churches teach people too much. "Oh really?"

Chris Rosebrough's Fighting for the Faith program played it in toto, and reviewed it (here).

See also James White's comments (on someone else's radio program) here. You want to know my reaction -- "what James White said!"

Rick Warren is very good at selling books. Some of them are even good books.

I'm not a big fan of megachurches for that reason-- they are businesses which have to please their customers to grow and even to survive.

That's not necessarily a bad thing. In fact, it is a good thing when you are selling hamburgers or paper clips. But it can lead to real conflicts in the church when God's word is in conflict with what happens to be popular at the time.

And it isn't just a problem with megachurches. It just happens to be more visible there.

"The PDL movement will end up producing "burnt over districts" of ex-believers who thought there was more to Christianity, and were led astray by Warren and his PDL. If there was "deeper" meaning and material for new converts, I'd think Warren would use the profits from PDL to publish it, or at least promote it. From what I've seen in his books and on Saddleback's website, I don't Warren has any idea how to transition a milk drinker into a meat eater."
-- Alex Murphy, October 10, 2005
"... it's quite a statement about one's priorities (and discernment) that so many previously refused to abandon Warren when he was promoting bad theology and lousy exegesis - and so many have withdrawn support from the good ship Saddleback, now that Warren is out promoting politically/socially liberal causes and personalities."
-- Alex Murphy, November 21, 2006
"Evangelicals are often equated with fundamentalists or the religious right, which annoys Warren. Although he's politically conservative - opposing abortion and gay marriage and supporting the death penalty - he pushes a much broader agenda and disdains both politics and fundamentalism....Warren predicts that fundamentalism, of all varieties, will be "one of the big enemies of the 21st century.""
-- The purpose-driven pastor (Rick Warren calls Christian fundamentalists an enemy)
"The evangelical movement has been confused with both the religious right and fundamentalism, which it is not. I'm not a fundamentalist, and I'm not part of the religious right."
-- Rick Warren in his own words

Piper took his 6 month sabbatical after asking Warren ...I had to wonder if he felt that he was becoming guilty of the sin of pride..

Rick Warren entirely teaches his own form of Methods Christianity...NOT correct Bible doctrine, which today is the Grace of God and Rightly Dividing the Word of Truth, and 5 points Calvinism; which I subscribe to fully. Rick Warren's gospel is a "methods" gospel of ANOTHER KIND, not the true Gospel of Gods's Grace.

If they are true, you had no choice at all; your subscribing to them has about the same meaning as a piece of wood burning when thrown into a bonfire.

The Grace of God and Rightly Dividing the Word of Truth and 5 points Calvinism are true doctrines to live by. You know nothing of them doctrinally speaking; you only know about the critism of Calvin and Luther and Piper, etc...

It is a false statment by you to say these doctrines are a piece of wood burning when thrown into a bonfire. Catholic legalism doctrine will be wood burning in a bonfire of Purgatory (i.e., Hell).
