Among Catholics, Obama job approval rating decreases to 50 percent

A new survey examining religious believers’ approval ratings of President Obama shows that about 50 percent of Catholics approve of his presidency, down from 67 percent in his first six months in office. Catholics make up about 22 percent of the U.S. population.

The Gallup Poll survey found the president’s approval rating among non-Catholic Christians, who make up 55 percent of the U.S. population, had fallen from 58 percent to 43 percent. His already low approval among Mormon respondents, who represent about two percent of U.S. adults, fell from 43 percent to 26 percent

About 78 percent of Muslim respondents approved of the Obama presidency, down eight percentage points from when the question was first asked. Second to Muslims were atheists, agnostics, and members of other non-Christian religions, who comprise about 13 percent of the U.S. population. While about 75 percent of these respondents approved of President Obama at the start of his term, their approval declined to about 64 percent.

Jews were the religious group third likeliest to approve of President Obama, giving him 61 percent approval. This too is a decline: in January-June 2009, their approval rating of the president was 77 percent.

Overall, 48 percent of Americans approve of President Obama’s job, down from 63 percent in the first months of his presidency. Gallup claims that its survey of over 276,000 adults claims an overall margin of error of plus or minus one percent.

You will note that the report does not distinguish between weekly Mass goers and those who are Christmas/Easter Catholics (or those who just call themselves Catholic and haven't been inside a church for 20 years). I wish that polling would look at that.

But, still, 50% is better than 67%.

It makes my head want to explode. How can 50% of Catholics support a politician who is so far left on life issues that he supports infanticide?

50%? Half of the Catholics must be either on welfare, working for the government, or black, I guess.

Or white überlibs. At least they will be dying off in the next couple of decades.

American Catholics, many who practice “cafeteria” style Catholicism (picking what they want to believe and leaving the rest), are the types who voted for the clown currently residing in the white house. Any Catholic, or other Christian, who believes in the sanctity and dignity of human life, from conception to natural death, would realize obama is a humanist, utilitarian, narcissistic creep. Not a Christian, or a muslim (although sympathies lie there), but in the end, only one who believes in himself, a little god.

I'd bet even Christmas-and-Easter Catholics disapprove of Obama these days. The supposed 50% of Catholics who disapprove of Obama probably haven't gone to church — even on Christmas or Easter — since childhood. (Remember, 25% of Americans identify themselves as Catholic, so the bar for being “Catholic” vis-a-vis polls is very low.)

Hence, He called it a STRONG delusion...and it is worldwide, and infects all who do not name the name of Christ.

Purity tests are rarely part of polling, and it sure wouldn't only apply to Catholics, it goes for everyone.

Look at that Protestant category, they don't even break out the largest non-Catholic church in America, or the third, or the fourth and so on, much less apply a purity test for it.

I have been disgusted by my fellow Catholics for a long time.

Jesus was NOT a socialist, but the “social justice” types in the Church have taken over.

My take too is that the liberal Catholics are all 60+. Good riddance in the next 20 years, they can be somebody else's problem.

Exactly. The baby boomers time is gone. There is one young lady in our Catholic moms playgroup that seems to be into Obama, but the rest of us just look at her like she’s crazy.

I gave up the Catholic faith for Lent about 40 years ago.

I think that you will see the opposite, as the Catholic church loses it's older whites, it will become even more liberal.

The biggest argument against a voucher program paying for a Catholic school education I’ve ever seen . . .

Oh man, are the fools who take these polls in for a surprise. They'd better be looking for a new line of work because they're going to be found out just like last bunch of idiots who were in reality just making up the poll numbers and handing them to websites as fact.

I don't think you could even come up with 50% approval for Barry by asking “were you born into a Catholic family” or something similar and saying you were surveying Catholics.

Maybe they were intentionally distorting and took a survey of the Notre Dame faculty, though, that might get them to 50%.

Regards
