The 8 Beatitudes

The 8 Beatitudes
Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.
Blessed are the meek: for they shall posses the land.
Blessed are they who mourn: for they shall be comforted
Blessed are they that hunger and thirst after justice: for they shall have their fill
Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy
Blessed are the clean of heart: for they shall see God
Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called children of God
Blessed are they that suffer persecution for justice' sake, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven

Why did the author leave out the 9th beatitude in verse 11?

I just pulled up the RSV. It is in regular type. This list above is in italics and is a smaller font. Looks like they are all there to me.

Matthew 5
3 "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.   Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.
4 "Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.   Blessed are they who mourn: for they shall be comforted
5 "Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.  Blessed are the meek: for they shall posses the land.
6 "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.   Blessed are they that hunger and thirst after justice: for they shall have their fill
7 "Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.  Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy
8 "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.   Blessed are the clean of heart: for they shall see God
9 "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.  Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called children of God
10 "Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.   Blessed are they that suffer persecution for justice' sake, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven

You left out verse 11. Why?

Marcus Grodi, of the Coming Home Network on EWTN, gave a talk on the Beatitudes at Franciscan University (Steubenville) a few weeks ago at a Defending the Faith Conference, and he put up his note on a website - he correlated them with some of the spirituality of those whose journey brings them closer to God - he mentioned his source for this being a saint (whose name I’ve forgotten) who convinced St. Jerome to produce the translation of the Bible known as the Vulgate (Hebrew to Greek, if I remember correctly)

Here’s the website, which was what he put up on the screen as he lectured to us:
http://www.deepinscripture.com/pdf/Beatitudes.pdf

The pattern was that one sheds love of self and possessions, then turns to do God’s will, not only for the benefits it brings to the self, but ultimately for the love of God, and in spite of the persecution that will ensue. He puts it much more eloquently than I do, though - but that was the gist of it, as I remember.

Is this what you are looking for?

Matthew 5
11 "Blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account.
12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so men persecuted the prophets who were before you.

We learned it as 8, not 9.

I just figure God wasn’t careless with His word, so I’ve always counted nine.

Matthew 5:11. Count them:

1. Blessed are the poor in spirit,
2. Blessed are those who mourn,
3. Blessed are the meek,
4. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst . .
5. Blessed are the merciful,
6. Blessed are the pure in heart,
7. Blessed are the peacemakers,
8. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness . 9. Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, . .

I see what you are saying. No biblical scholar here, but I am assuming we count 8 Beatitudes because in those Jesus is talking about various groups, but, then, in what you are calling the 9th, he is addressing his followers to tell them that they shall be blessed, also, when others persecute them.
