Q: What injury does mortal sin do the soul?
A: (1) Mortal sin deprives the soul of grace and of the friendship of God; (2) It makes it lose Heaven; (3) It deprives it of merits already acquired, and renders it incapable of acquiring new merits; (4) It makes it the slave of the devil; (5) It makes it deserve hell as well as the chastisements of this life.
Q: Besides grave matter, what is required to constitute a mortal sin?
A: To constitute a mortal sin, besides grave matter there is also required full consciousness of the gravity of the matter, along with the deliberate will to commit the sin.

Mortal sin also requires deliberate will and full knowledge. I don’t doubt that many who have had abortions or that procure abortions will have these as well.

Any sin that is NOT repented of will remain with a person to his death. Not just the sins against the Holy Spirit, although they are much more serious.

Grave matter — abortion kills a baby; I will no longer be pregnant

Full knowledge — yes, I know it kills the baby and I won’t have to go through pregnancy or labor or birthing pains.

Deliberate consent — Yes, I sign the paper giving the abortionist my permission to perform the abortion.

To me, that makes it a mortal sin.

Five Steps for A Good Confession

2. Be sincerely sorry for your sins.
3. Confess your sins.
4. Resolve to amend your life.
5. After your confession do the penance the priest assigns.

You may not be aware that in the words of absolution spoken by the priest -- that it is God who forgives a penitent's sins.

Of COURSE there is forgiveness of Mortal Sin!! Christ didn't die on the cross just for Venial Sins!!

If a person is TRULT SORRY and does Penance, he will be forgiven.

That was this past Sunday's Gospel reading.

And whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.

What do you understand that to mean? How is it that we can speak against the Son of Man but not against the Holy Spirit? Aren't both part of the Trinity? What distinguishes the two that a statement of eternal condemnation should be attributed to the Holy Spirit and not to the Son of Man?

Agere is correct with regard to Church dogma. None of us can state that any act is a “mortal sin” in each and every situation as none of us can see inside another’s heart and mind, to wit: “although we can judge that an act is in itself a grave offense, we must entrust judgment of persons to the justice and mercy of God.” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, s. 1861) It is not EVER ours to judge whether an act is a mortal sin or a venial sin. That judgment is left to God alone.
