Y.M.C.A. Is Downsizing to a Single Letter

Note to the Village People: The lyrics in your biggest hit need an update. The organization previously known as the Y.M.C.A. is henceforth to be called “the Y.”

One of the nation’s most iconic nonprofit organizations, founded 166 years ago in England as the Young Men’s Christian Association, is undergoing a major rebranding, adopting as its name the nickname everyone has used for generations.

“It’s a way of being warmer, more genuine, more welcoming, when you call yourself what everyone else calls you,” said Kate Coleman, the organization’s senior vice president and chief marketing officer.

We are 20-year members. Very discouraging (but not surprising) news.

In the original group, only "Indian" was openly gay. He complained about that in his interview to Playboy. Later, "Cowboy" came out. The rest of the group are considered straight

-Cowboy - Queer

- Indian - Queer

- Armed Forces Guy (Sailor)- Queer

- Biker - Surprisingly Not Gay

- Police Man - Again Surprisingly Not Gay

- Construction Guy- Not Gay

“my local Y displays the text of John 3:16 behind the front desk. Different from most Y’s I think.”

Nope they re-established the Christian base of the Y. Apparently most of the Ys have scripture painted in various places around the buildings.

I’m not sure how this new development fits in to this.

Apparently, references to fatherhood are now considered "sexist."

A few years ago at church on Mothers Day there was honor and praise for all the mothers in the congregation. On Fathers Day there was a lecture and prayer for men to be better fathers.

I felt insulted and until that day I hadn't realized how left wing and socialist the Catholic church had become. Now I just sit there listening to see how much leftist crap comes out of the priests mouth. I wonder if that's why attendance has dropped off in the last few years.

Can anyone tell us when the works of the YMCA were forthrightly and purposefully related to any Christian teachings, doctrines or attitudes?

The YWCA adjacent to the Madison campus of the Univ. of Wis. was, and yet may be, a haven for radical feminist activists absent any reference to Christianity.

Wait until you go to church and they sing, “ONWARD A DIVERSE GROUP OF SOLDIERS” Way things are going in this country, nothing would surprise me.

It'll be Onward Diverse Group of Community Organizers.. "Soldiers" is to militaristic.

Apparently, fro the article, they are using the name “Y’ as a brand name only and the organization will retain it’s old name.

One of the interesting tidbits in the article is that the organization’s membership peaked in 2007. The org is alive and doing well from what I can see.

But low profile.

So what do they claim just a “Y” stands for? It is stupid by itself.

Exactly my thought. Everyone calls it the "Y" and whether they officially change the name or not, that will remain. So "Y" bother? It is stupid to change it now, because there is no purpose or good reason. Sometimes change is not better. As Obama has taught us so clearly.

Is that similar to “Eating at the Y”?

If so, I’m all for it!

Yeah because everyone knows Christ was not a kind, welcoming figure

Wonder if the Congressional Black Shakedown Artists, La Raza, National Order of Women, etc will be doing similar changing to be more “inclusive”.

Guess they got some feedback!

Absolutely. Since the bailouts, they're very sensitive to customer perception. They've lost millions of customers as it is by becoming "Government Motors."

Some years ago here in Asheville the local Jewish community erected a building called the “Jewish Community Center.” When they dedicated the building, the keynote address was given by the minister of the local First Baptist Church. When I commented to a friend that it seemed strange for the Jewish Community Center to have a Christian minister featured at the dedication, he said “You’ve got to understand that the Jewish Community Center is Jewish in the same way that the YMCA is Christian.”
