Me too.

(I imagine they don't count Antartica since there aren't any permanent settlements there)

But if you take a look at Vatican writing (look, for example, at JPII's Apostolic Exhortation Ecclesia in America), you will find that when they address "America," they are referring to both Continents; while if they intend to address the US, they say "the United States".

Unfortunately, a lot of commentators don't quite grasp that and they then misread the documents.

If you think about it, though, it may have something to do with N/S America both being the "new world"

Some count 5 (the five rings in the Olympic symbol is supposed to represent the 5 continents).

The difference between 5 and 7 is that the 5 counts North and South America as one continent, and isn’t counting Antarctica.
