As a Protestant, I am saddened by these revelations. Not only for the damage done to Christianity in general, but also the harm to an institution that was (and is) crucical to Western Civilization. Indeed, one can agrue that the Roman Catholic Church created Western Civilization. I disagree with many of the specifics of Catholic theology, but I cannot but appreciate the contributions the Roman Church made to the development of the West.
