My local paper commemorated Good Friday by publishing a truly foul anti-Catholic, anti-Pope cartoon. I wrote them a letter immediately, and I hope other Catholics did, too.

It was the kind of cartoon that you would see published in Ku Klux Klan material here in the 1920s (leering, deformed looking Pope with an oversize miter, etc.).

all these are remembered by name, while the reviling mob and persecutors are lost to history.

Well ... we also remember Judas the Betrayer, along with Pontius Pilate, Caiaphas, and Herod.

a temptation to despair for the future of the Church,

I lift up my eyes to the hills; from where comes my help? My help is in the Name of The Lord, who made Heaven and Earth.

a temptation to turn our attention from our Paschal renewal,

Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.

and a temptation to despise those who have shown such scorn for our faith and our Holy Father.

Bless those who curse you, and pray for those who persecute you. Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.
