Featured Term (selected at random):

DISPENSATION

A relaxation of the Church's law in a particular case. It is neither an abrogation of the law nor an excuse from observing the law but a release from its observance, temporarily or permanently, by competent authority, for good reasons. the Pope can dispense from all purely ecclesiastical laws, Other Church authorities can dispense from the laws that they or their predecessors have passed. Only those can dispense from the laws of a higher superior who are granted the power either by the Church's general legislation or by a special delegation. (Etym. Latin dispensatio, distribution, administration; freeing, release: from dis- + pendere, to weigh: dispendere, to weigh out.)

Read the definition carefully before entering into discussion. This is not about dispensationalism -- note the definition strictly refers to **a particular case.**

Any examples of a particular case dispensation out there?

Just a heads up here.

I don’t think this thread has anything to do with some our recent discussion posts..... :-)

So I won’t be quoting Paul....

or Darby, or Chafer, or Dillow, etc....

Cheers!!!

:-)

Shirley MaClaine was always talking about dispenstions in “Two Mules for Sister Sara”

Serving members of the armed forces used to be “dispensed” from the Friday abstinence from meat. My father thought that was silly, since they always had fish available on Fridays on the carrier or in the base mess, but obviously i some situations, such as infantry combat, it would have made a difference.

Yes, it is probably worthwhile to mention that the same word in Protestant circles came to take on a completely unrelated historical and eschatological meaning. Roughly, it is referring to stages or epoches of divine revelation.

As an extension of that, it also refers, again, in Protestant contexts, to a certain system of thought as regards the present day country of Israel.

I only mention that by way of disambiguation; I don’t know much further and do not take sides in Protestant disputes.

That’s an excellent example.

I wasn’t aware of that difference in meanings. Very different!

Thanks.

If St. Patrick’s Day falls on a Friday — our priest will give the Seniors’ Group a dispensation so that can have the corned beef and cabbage and potatoes meal.

Our previous pastor and the one in Norman did the same, so the Knights of Columbus could hold a dinner. I don’t think the issue has arisen since we got our new pastor here.

I see St. Patrick’s Day is on a Wednesday this year. If Anoreth is home, we can have her steak dinner that night, since St. Joseph’s Day is the Friday.
