Lord Carey of Clifton has called on his successor as Archbishop of Canterbury to complain to the Pope in person about not being consulted over plans to admit disaffected Anglicans to the Roman Catholic Church.
Lord Carey warned that the Popes strategy could damage relations with the Vatican. Lord Carey, who stepped down in 2002, urged Dr Rowan Williams to protest strongly when he visits the Pope in Rome next month.
Lord Carey was speaking after the joint press conference this week between Dr Williams and the Catholic Archbishop of Westminster, the Most Rev Vincent Nichols, to announce the move. Under an apostolic constitution decree, the Pope will set up personal ordinariates, or extra-geographical Roman Catholic dioceses, such as those that already exist in the military, to take in former Anglicans who oppose women bishops and accept the Petrine ministry of Rome.
Dr Williams appeared distressed when he said at the press conference, hosted by the Roman Catholic Church in Eccleston Square, that he had known nothing of the initiative until two weeks ago. He was notified formally only when Cardinal William Levada, Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, visited last weekend to fill in some of the detail.
The Times understands that the former Archbishop of Westminster, Cardinal Cormac Murphy-OConnor, a former co-chairman of the AnglicanRoman Catholic International Commission, known as Arcic, tried unsuccessfully to stop the apostolic constitution being published. His protests and others concerns delayed its publication, intended for last February.
The two archbishops presented the constitution as a response by Pope Benedict XVI to a number of requests over the past few years to the Holy See from groups of Anglicans who wish to enter into full visible communion with the Roman Catholic Church.
They said: The announcement ... brings to an

And the pope, in his humble and charitable way, should respond with, “Get over it. We tried it the other way. It didn’t work. Now we have to fix your problem for you.”
Could well damage relations with the Vatican? Oh, that would be terrible. After all, we all know the fierce resistance those Anglicans have put up against the Islamic subversion of Britain and the the zeal with which they have defended the institution of marriage. They are a force to be reckoned with I tell ya. [/s]
That about sums it up. Ruffled feathers notwithstanding.
The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, is a nut.
He's only too happy to surrender to the Muslims, but he seems to draw the line at Catholics.
Rowan Williams was too busy on his knees praying to Mecca and promoting Sharia Law.
The Anglican Church still has relations with the Roman Catholic Church after the appointment of the “Red” Archbishop of Canterbury?
It is perfectly possible to achieve the position of Archbishop without being at all a Christian. And Rowan Williams has never shown any inclination to perform as a servant to Christ.
I am sure Dr. Williams knows all the formalities and rituals. He just never, well, BELIEVED in any of that stuff.
I think he is also known as The First Druid.
The BBC toned down their Catholic bashing after PC insanity kicked in. Now the BBC just essentially thinks all whites are evil.
I am not promoting Catholicism either but Rowan Williams and liberal Anglican insanity made the Church of England irrelevant which is sad.
Lord Carey warned that the Pope’s strategy could damage relations with the Vatican.
What kind of a worry is that? The Anglicans have proved over and over that they don't care what Rome thinks, and have not hesitated for a second to adopt every unchristian idea that has come to their minds. They knew what Rome would think of homosexual marriages, women priests, and women and homosexuals as bishops, and did they care? No, not a bit. They only worry about relations when Rome is actually doing something in the interest of Christians. I can't imagine anyone with any sense at all could muster any concern for these relations whatsoever.
The Pope has obviously struck at the heart of the apostate Anglican rabble, and Oh! how they are squealing at the loss of money in the plate.
The Church of England, which had sent missionaries around the globe, is now spiritually dead. This applies to the leadership of the church, while there are still local congregations still on fire - many in the third world. I start to wonder if Anglican churches in places like Nigeria are sending missionaries to Britain.
A few years ago, he was known on FR as the Archdruid of Canterbury.
Now, he seems to be the bold and heroic Defender of Protestantism.
George Carey was a disaster as Archbishop. No wonder he’s “appalled”.
Traditional congregants are appalled at their treatment by Archbishop Williams and much of his Anglican clergy - especially those miscreant, triumphalist, and politically correct American Episcopals.
The arrogance of “Lord Carey” is breathtaking. The Pope should have been concerned about the pride and face of that clown the Archdruid? Anglicans, including the so called Archbishop Of Armagh, presided over a policy of genocide against Irish Catholics in the mid 19th century. They deserve nothing, nothing but contempt from the Pope.
Why Murphy-O’Connor is no longer in charge. He was moved aside because he was simply an impediment to progress.
This is a timesonline article.
Move on folks; it’s biased.
The bishops in the CofE are recommended by the Prime Minister and appointed by the Monarch. Therefore it is primarily a political appointment and not a theological one.
From an examination of the last 25 years of appointments, it is clear that the CofE considers belief in the Christian God to be an extra, if not impediment.
Let's see, Canterbury has:
