Featured Term (selected at random):

HERMENEUTICS

The art and science of interpreting the Sacred Scriptures and of inquiring into their true meaning. It defines the laws that exegetes are to follow in order to determine and explain the sense of the revealed word of God. It presupposes that the interpreter has a knowledge of the biblical languages and of such sciences as contribute to a better understanding of Holy Writ. (Etym. Greek herm_neus, interpreter.)

Every now and then I get into a conversation with a Protestant and it goes somewhat like this.

Protestant: Where is X in the Bible? (X being something Catholic).

Annalex: Here (chapter and verse), here and here.

Protestant: Oh, no. This is horrible hermeneutics. The proper meaning of these scriptures is (explains why the scripture in question should not have been written in the first place).

In light of this, I propose this definition.

Hermeneutics: the system of rules of scriptural interpretation whereby isolated quotes from St. Paul, taken against their context, and from the Old Testament, are given superior status to the four Gospels, the Catholic Epistles, the rest of Pauline Epistles, and the rest of the Old Testament.

According to the Roman Catholics that post around here, only their authorized interpreters are allowed to handle the Scriptures. I think they quote I Hesitations to support this claim.

Why then would they need hermeneutics? They are never wrong, are they?

Discussing Hermeneutics is hard without also discussing exegesis and eisogesis. Without discussing the methods which you use in practicing hermeneutics, you can’t say that you are correct in your findings or support your conclusions.

Hermaneutics: The art and science of interpreting wacky liberals and of inquiring into their true meaning. It defines the laws that exegetes are to follow in order to determine and explain the nonsense of the words used by liberals. It presupposes that the interpreter has a knowledge of liberal jabberwocky semiotics and of such sciences as contribute to a better understanding of this bizarre phenomenon.(Etym. Greek: ἑρμηνεύω, hermeneuō, 'translate' or 'interpret')"

Have used the term Hermeneutics more than a few times on FR
to explain what is taught in seminary for both Catholic, Lutheran and Episcopal, besides Latin, Greek and Hebrew, etc.

Unlike the so called religion TV shysters
