The Utah territory was the first to let women vote. Women lost the right to vote when Utah became a state.

A small “inaccuracy” of your own?

In July 1890, the Territory of Wyoming, which allowed women to vote, was admitted as a state. Wyoming became the first state with women suffrage. By 1900, Utah, Colorado, and Idaho joined Wyoming in allowing women to vote.

“But it certainly seemed as if she would’ve been more glad if Mormon women really had been tied to trees and whipped.”

I have no doubt she wished Mormon women really had been tied to trees and whipped. Having an excuse to justify one’s bigotry is very comforting. There are lots of threads in the Religion forum that contain examples of this kind of attitude.

***In 21st-century Utah, “Female Life Among the Mormons” seems silly, even campy. But, obviously, the book’s owner thought — perhaps hoped — it was genuine.

Upon learning that it’s fiction, she gasps and says, “I’m actually a little disappointed. But I’m glad to know the truth.” ***

So, can we hold the Book of Mormon to the same standards of evidence?

"History Detectives" (8 p.m., Ch. 7) is a fascinating series in which historical objects are examined to determine if they're authentic.

Too bad they don't take a look at the various artifacts that the Mormons claim support their views re: native americans.

If you ever read any of Zane Gray’s books about the LDS Church, you will find much of the same.

And part of his fiction is still being repeated today.

[T]he horrors of "Female Life Among the Mormons" is a work of fiction including the "abominations" of polygamy and the "degradation it imposes on females"

Polygamy is an abomination and it degrades females

Anyone who has any doubts should read this primer prepared by the Arizona and Utah Offices of the Attorney General; and/or should watch this approximately 90 minute video on the subject.

Note: You should be warned the information contained in links both is extremely emotionally disturbing.

The Utah territory was the first to let women vote.

Well, first of all UG that is not true.

But secondly, I keep seeing this repeated "reaching" by the LDS members here on Free Republic. I suspect you all are pinging and Freepmail each other. Nothing wrong with that, the Christians do the same thing. The problem I have is that we are fed (daily) this LDS diet of half truths and propaganda.

When we oppose it, we care called "bigots", or worse.

Moreover, the threads you all are peddling are all of the same theme - to wit - Mormonism is true and there is "evidence" for it.

The problem is, the "evidence" does not stand up to scrutiny.

I have heard you post that you prayed, and the spirit told you Mormonism is true.

Be careful what "spirit" you are listening too. Satan prowls the earth as a lion ready to devour, and the Evil One has false signals and signs everywhere. Jesus said so.

Take care.

The book can be read online:

FEMALE LIFE AMONG THE MORMONS: A NARRATIVE OF MANY YEARS' PERSONAL EXPERIENCE. BY THE WIFE OF A MORMON ELDER, RECENTLY FROM UTAH.

Whether that book is false, the impression is that there were no other books written that portrayed the same awful history. But in fact there are: “Tell It All” by Stenthouse and “Wife No. 19” by Ann Young (wife of Brigham who sued him and won).

I’ll post links later.

Well, without reading the book and examining its provenance, it’s hard to say, but I am struck by the fact that these “experts” don’t seem to offer anything in the way of evidence. I was also struck that they began with the politically correct assumption that “Mormons don’t behave this way,” and went on from there. If you start with your conclusion already in hand, there’s usually a tendency to find evidence to support it.

Having said that, this does, indeed, sound like a work of fiction. But it irks me the way they say, basically, “I’m the expert, and I’m never wrong.”

Also, it’s not clear whether the woman who found the book is disappointed because she’s a bigot, or because she thought she had a rare and immensely valuable antique book, but instead was told that it’s a fake.

How old is the book? What kind of paper? What kind of thread was used for the binding? Were there any watermarks in the paper, linen or cotton or some mixture? Was it a very old fictional account, or a more recent one? The “experts” are silent.

Expert, Schexpert. And that doesn’t mean that I think that Mormons used to beat their wives, only that these sound like typical TV experts.

>>Among other things, it purports to tell the story of Joseph Smith’s death and gets it flat-out wrong. <<

Taking that last statement at face value, that’s a pretty easy thing to confirm. Based on that, the amazing thing is that anybody thought this book was authentic.

I’d like to see this show take on slightly more challenging tasks. But then, it is just a TV show...
